This is a really picky, who gives a damm, sort of thing. I know, I know, I should be thinking about more important things. My question is, when did this billet aluminumn thing get started. Every time I pick up a catalog or what ever, they are talking about billet this, billet that. I understand that it is a way to let you know that it is machined, not stamped, forged, or sheet. But they seem to be hinting that there is more to this. For crying out loud, most of the aluminumn sold is in billet form. If you purchase anything that is machined it is billet related. Oh well, I told you it was picky, now aren't you sorry you took the time to read this.

While we're at it why do some products only come in extra large, jumbo and colossal sizes?

I think you can thank the street roadster group for this. The billet craze was started by Boyd Cottington and mushroomed from there.

SWAG: The speed of dark is exactly the same as the speed of light. When you turn the light off it takes the dark the same amount of time to reach you that the light did when you turned it on. Seems like anyway.

Billet is supposed to mean quality these days, and in many cases it is no better and even worse than cast components. I have seen some of these wonder-billet peices that look like they were carved out with a hacksaw. If the billet peice was made from stock that is not up to the job you are further behind than if it was cast from a suitable material. Billet schmillet!!!!! Ask the super billet doo dad people how the material was stress relieved, you will likely get a blank stare. Done right by good machinists with good processes billet rocks, done wrong it is junk.

So here's a problem, I currently have a big slab of alum. in my mill that when I am done will be milled, drilled, and tapped enough to make all the billet guys blurt out that it is machined from billet alum. Problem is it is cast tooling plate the size of a foot thick coffee table. Blurs the line I guess. Speed of dark is faster than light, ask any little kid afraid of monsters in the hall.
