I have gutted the mufflers on both my trucks. I notice NO difference in noise level inside the cab and little to no difference outside. I am an old muffler shop owner who has studied how to control the noise on high performance motors while keeping them as quiet as possible. I do not argue that a nice aftermarket exhaust with a straight thru muffler would be better, but the cost of gutting a muffler is virtually nothing except for a little work... and it really helps the performance and economy!

If anyone is interested in how to gut a muffler, let me know. I would be happy to send you some suggestions.

Sean,

I have been studying your picture of the inside of your muffler. If possible, could you do me a favor and cut the case in the chamber with all the cross pipes and give it a shake and see if it will come apart without cutting the cross pipes or if the cross pipes have to be cut too to separate the muffler into two halves to gut it? Thanks.

You Gave Me An Idea

So for those of us who cannot 'gut' a muffler (lacking tools and skills) can you suggest a muffler brand that fits in the stock exhaust system and gives the same or similar result as a gutted muff?
