Like I said before I have run BFG's on all my trucks infact my tj and my dodge dakota 4x4 both have bfg's the tj runs mtr's and the dakota has at's. I had bfgs on my 3500 but changed to the toyo 35,s and I am totally convinced that is the correct tire for the truck due to the way the truck now handles. I can run at 90 mph on the freeway go into a turn and hit a bump and the truck will not become upset or off balance. I also have a kore system I installed for my suspension. I bought it from Greg before He passed.

Appreciate the info. Sounds like the Toyos are working pretty good. I think they look fine, and probably have comparable wear with other tires. I replaced the Goodyears I had on our Jeep with Toyos because the Goodyears wore out way too soon. Not sure if the Goodyear compound improved, but if so, will consider trying them again.

Thanks everyone for the input.

In regards to "D" rated tires vs. "E" rated tires, I can tell you that we get this question almost daily. "My truck has death wobble, what should I do, and what is causing it". The first question I ask is what kind of tire are you running and is it "E" rated. Everyone that calls, that has no other issues with the truck (ball joints, etc. ) is running a "D" rated tire. Most of them are running BFG's.

Does that prove that E rated are better, no, but think about it. It's called gravity. How much does that CTD weigh? Get the truck moving sideways and gravity starts to act. Would you rather have stiffer sideway to help control it?

Personally, I love BFG tires. They have driven me in and out of Baja for years on many trucks with no flats. However, all of those trucks were lighter weight, gassers.

We have also run "D" rated tires on a CTD. Did they explode the second I put them on, NO. However, when we put the E rated tires on the truck, the vehicle was far more stable. It cornered better and tracked better.

Just my two cents.

My personal experience is similar. I will never have anything less than E rated tires on my truck. Hell! I put E rated yokahamas on my wifes '04 Grand Cherokee. The tire guys looked at me like I was nuts. I just told him to put them on there! For another $10-$20 a piece, I prefer the more stable feel and the peace of mind. And I guess that's what this whole 3 page thread is all about... right? Personal Preference?

Tomeygun... . Nice tires. I would definately be interested in that tire in the future.

BHOLM... . Thanks for hijacking this "new tire" thread and wasting nearly a 1/2 hour of my time reading those incessant rantings. If you prefer D rated tires, then by all means, keep them on your truck.

The tire guys were right about you;) Those sidewalls just MUST be stiffer:-laf Yeah, if you put 80 psi in them!

Oh, and nobody twisted your arm to do the reading. Naturally I see you don't include yourself in the "hi-jacking", even though your comments follow the "hi-jacking" portion, not just a simple comment about Tommeys tires.

I have never said I "prefer" D rated tires. Just a futile attempt at shedding some light on the subject. Seems about as impossible as talking a Ford guy into buying a Dodge, their mind is made up, right or wrong, smart or stupid, there is no convincing some people.

Enjoy those E rated tires on the Grand Cherokee..... what a laugh.

Why the big deal about E tires on little vehicles? I have E's on my M151 and it weighs half of his Grand Cherokee's weight, about 2200 lbs. :-laf They were $1 more per tire for the E's over the D's, I don't think it will hurt anything. Matter of fact I can run them with 5 PSI in each tire and they barely move, guess they should last a while... . Don't remember what brand they were, bought them at Orschlen's Farm Supply.

little update for ya...

one month and these tires are GREAT!!! they handle very good and at 75psi front and 60psi in the back - the MPG are slightly up on the highay

Since I dont commuter very far on non-highway roads, I leave them that high of PSI - actually does not ride bad at all

One thing is the width, or lack there of - makes 50ft of rubber come off VERY easy

Tomeygun;

Did you have to reflash the computer going the 285 size. I like the looks of those tires. Probably will get them for my 03 this fall.

I had tires that were 32. 8inches tall and I adjustes the ECM for that changed (actaully 2% more just so I would not get speeding tickets :-laf)

So when I switched to 34inch tall tires, I have no bothered to re-adjust yet...

ok if you took the square inches of the inside of the two tires the 265 and the 285 and then applide the psi of each tire i think that the ability to support a load would be very close cause the 285 has more surface area really not that compicated

I ran the 285 70 17 KO's D rating and now the Toyo AT E’. I haul a 12K Horse trailer. The only difference is the ride..... Ko's ride so much better. Stability is the same. Radial pull with BFG sent me the Toyo AT direction. No doubt Toyo AT are better balanced... (no pull), wearing but mileage diff seems so great. I suspect I'll try D range Toyo AT or go back to BFG KO. I'm 30 K into Toyo AT, no flats, they wear even steven, yet my teeth are loose.

I had the opposite experience with my '99. My KO's beat me to death and induced a vibration that BFG and Discount Tire blamed on my truck. One tire took ten ounces of weight to balance. I switched over to Toyo M-55's,same size but E rated, minimal weight to balance, vibration gone and softer ride at 60psi.

Bajabob

What size M-55's are you running? do you mind telling me (and the world) how much they cost each? I'm looking at replacing my stock Michelins and going to the Toyo M-55 275/70r18's but was quoted a price of over $400 per tire. These, if I get them, will be on my new '07, 5. 9, 3500SRW 4x4.

PS I can't figure out how to get my truck info to show up under this message.

thanks, Richard

Just got a price of 165. 00,at that price I have to pull the trigger and get them. I will not really need them to after the winter,But with oil prices on the rise i am sure tire prices will go up also.

Just a quick note regarding "D" versus "E" rated tires, if you've placed "D" rated tires on a vehicle when the manufacturer has recommended "E" tires, and you are involved in an accident, be prepared for the look of great satisfaction from the other driver's lawyer. They love it when you make it easy for them to label you as an wacko driver with unsafe modifications. Doesn't mean they are right, but most juries won't agree with you when you say "I've driven 200,000 miles without a problem".

Underrated tires.

Good point. One of my old Bridgestone AT's,load range "D",weight rating:3305# ea,blew out@65mph and I incurred $3300 damage in 15 sec. Total weight of my truck was 8250# w/camper,full fuel tank. I luckily ran my truck into a AAA approved repair facility, and they accepted the repair bid uninspected. The repair facility was going to replace the blown tire and I said"no way". Didn't want a paper trail to lead to the cause of the blowout which was an underrated tire. ;)

I am sure the other side is going to have to prove negligence on your part. Placing "D" rated tires on my dually which is rated at GVW of 12,200#s. If I was running empty when this bad wreck occured there is no way they can prove negligence because of the tires. . I would not run "D" rated tires anyway.

Unfortunately I've had twenty plus years of experience with the legal system (West Coast-Rather Liberal) and litigators will use anything they possibly can to show that you have a record of faulty decisions. They really don't need to prove 100% that your decision to mount "D" rated was the root cause of an issue. They just use it as part of their case. As an example, since my vehicle has a suspension lift, larger than factory tires, has numerous performance upgrades and one heck of a lot bigger bumpers than stock, should I plow into some little old lady in her stock Honda, her lawyer can easily make it appear that I'm a freak of nature that belongs in jail.

Anyone driving a modified vehicle needs to understand that they open themselves up to a larger settlement should they be involved in an accident. Again, doesn't mean that this is fair or proper, but it is the fact. Who do you think a jury will believe, that little old lady who says she was just driving down the road to pick up her grandkids or that psycho guy in the jacked up death rig. Jury members love little old ladies, heck they love those poor innocent people who put piping hot cups of Mc'ds coffee between their legs dont they!
