type of ship

I am glad you asked

A chance to have a shameless plug for a picture of my truck

This is a Alaska State ferry holds 150 cars and 500 passengers she goes from bellingham WA to Skagway Alaska round trip every friday 2240 miles round trip in 7 days

picture 2 is of my truck and my ship in Ketchikan alaska

I've been in the engine room of that ferry. Or one like it. There are two V-12's and one V-10, if I remember. The shaft to the screw is at least a foot in diameter. Very low RPM. Very high dB. Awesome! If you ever get a chance, book a berth for the trip up and back. It's a great vacation. No TV, radio, etc. Great scenery!

engine room

Hey Amink

I am the second Assisant engineer on the Columbia the ship pictured there are 2 Main engines Enterprise V 16 for Main propulsin

and 3 Caterpillar 3512 generator sets for electric generation

A sister ship has V12 for mains.

Any more Questions and if some one decides to ride my ship look me up

I am known as tiny

So what kind of milage does that thing (the ship) get? Very cool.

I've worked around airplanes for over 30 years (yawn), but am very fastinated by big ships, but don't see too many of them in CO and AZ.

Chris- I was on the Columbia. We went back in '90 or '91. Duct taped our tent to the stern deck! It was like everyone who was hiking in Canada caught a ride back to Bellingham. All kinds of granola crunchers on the way back. My fiance's folks and aunts and uncles had cabins for cocktail hour. Those are some amazing power plants.

fuel milage

Klenger

on an average week cruising at about 17 knots including the generators the columbia uses about 56000 gallons of fuel in 7 days. :--)

If my math is right, that works out to 0. 05nm / gallon. Figuring the conversion to statute miles should bring that up some :) After some more figuring, I get about 303 feet / gallon. Not bad actually.

Chris... what kind of fender flares are those?

You are one LUCKY man to get to see what you see every day. I almost moved to Anacortes to work in the refinery last year, but I got a great opportunity here that I couldn't pass up.

Thanks

the Columbia is only 411 feet long, and most of the fuel burning formulas are based on a single screw single engine ship however My wife the bestest wife ever and her degree in mathmatics has "spoken" the ship gets . 04 miles per gallon it takes 1 gallon to move her (the Ship) 211 feet. these figures based on 2 known Quantites 56000 gallons of fuel used for a round trip of 2241 miles however we will leave it at statute miles and not worry about nautical miles I do not want to confuse you guys any more
