Pictures of lumber rack

I had been asked by Turbo Horseman to post a few pictures and data on my Rack-It brand lumber rack, and so rather than clutter up my post about my new Denver Off Road bumper with pictures of the lumber rack, I thought it best to start a new thread. Also, that way if anyone else might be interested in lumber racks, they would be more likely to discover this thread.



So... here you go.



I bought the rack about 4 months ago. It is a Rack-It brand, built just up the road from me in Shingle Springs, CA. It is extremely heavy duty and high quality. I ordered it with an extra cross piece that you can put anywhere you like, and also an extra truck bed rail - normally racks rest on the driver and passenger side bed rails, mine has a third part that rests on the bed rail that goes across the bed just behind the cab. I don't have a picture of this though, so you'll just have to use your imagination.

I put 2" pipe insulation on the cross pieces, as I am always hitting my head on them when I'm in the bed of the truck, and my girlfriend's young kids both love playing in the bed of the truck, and her son (3 years old) is just tall enough that he frequently bumps his head on them too.



In the first picture above, you can see the extra cross brace in the middle.



Here is another view taken from the front bumper of the truck, I was hoping to better show all 4 cross pieces of the rack, but I just couldn't get up high enough to get a good angle.

I very seriously doubt they have a web site, as I looked myself before I bought this rack. They are a smallish company, located up in the Sierra foothills near Placerville. I don't know if they sell directly, but you could call and ask I guess. I bought mine from a local plumbing supply outfit - D & D Plumbing. I paid $440 total for mine, and as I said I got 2 extra pieces more than the base rack comes with.



Base rack for long bed, extended cab pickup - $350

Extra top piece / support - $40

Extra bed rail portion that sits on the front bed rail right behind the cab of truck - $50.

Hi Folks,



The Rack-It on my Dodge is the third for me. Got my first one in '85 for an old GMC. They've held up fine under ridiculous loads. The number for them can be seen in one of Tom's pictures. They don't sell to the public, but can probably tell you a local dealer's number.



Tom, have you ever checked out their yard in Barrett business park? They probably have 1000 racks awaiting shipment!

Can the rack over the roof hold a four wheeler?



I was looking to put a Yamaha Raptor over the roof, a Yamaha Warrior behind that, and a Honda Recon in the pickup bed?



If it could hold the ~500 pounds over the roof I would be VERY Interested.

Hey Tom,



Thanks for the post. I've been searching for rack info and this is the exact style I like.



Question - Do you hear any wind noise from it?

I'm also wondering what the aerodynamic effect is and how that might affect MPG.



I'm not a tradesman, so my truck is more commuter-mobile than work tool, so it may be hard to justify purchasing one



I wonder if anyone has ever put some kind of paneling on top that would act as a shade or even rain cover or be suitable for holding smaller than lumber-sized items.

Merrick - hmmm, well, the guy I sold my old '87 Ford F250 6. 9 diesel to has a similar Rack-It rack, and he has hauled some very serious weight on his, I'll ask him for his opinion. I have only had this rack since Christmas 2002, and haven't really hauled much heavy weight on it. But, on a regular cab truck, I wouldn't doubt this rack could hold up 500 pounds right over the cab. Only reason I said regular cab, the rack overhang over the cab is shorter than for my quad cab rack, so I just figured it would be a bit stronger.



Boondocker - glad ya liked my web site I am a computer systems admin, so I don't use the rack on a frequent basis. Like several of my BOMBs, I got it for the once in a while use. I want my truck to be the ultimate utility truck, within reason (i. e. no service body or flar bed) To answer your question, no I don't hear any wind noise from it. Of course, ya can't hear much over the HX40 singing through my AFE filter :-laf :-laf :-laf Also, I have not seen the slightest change in MPG because of the rack. I log every gallon of fuel that goes in the tank, and calculate mileage by hand instead of relying on the overhead computer, so I am fairly confident I know how the truck does.

Rack-It also makes models that go over camper shells, so if you like this rack but have a topper, you're in luck
