Truck Trends website has a few disguised pictures of the new HD Dodge CrewCab. They are hiding the front and rear end pretty good but that SMALL rear door doesn't look good. It does not appear to have full size doors on the rear. It may be a QUAD CAB, but I doubt it with the exposed handles and the way they are opening. I hope this isn't what they have in mind for CREWCAB competition. . if it is Brand X is still going to be selling a ton of 4 doors... CJ

Cobrajet,

That last picture of the black 1 ton is good. The doors are full size looking from this view.

It looks great. Now I have to figure out how to get my 12 valve into that new truck!

The white truck has a bad angle in the shot and makes it appear shorter.

Don~

man I am really wanting a 4 door now. My friends PSD is all we use for our business and I would rather be rolling around in 4 door cummins.

I don't know, I think the cab looks at least as large as the SuperDuties'. None of the shots are directly from the side so it'll make the doors look smaller. One way to measure is distance between door handles.

The front doors are decent size so that adds space there. Considering the steep rake the windshield takes on these trucks, and that the top of the door levels off for a distance, tells me they are decent size. We'll just have to wait and see.

As for the rearview mirrors, I think the SD's look a lot better.

I just looked at those pics. It looks like the rear doors are bigger than quad cab doors but smaller than front doors, somewhere in the middle. Looks like they heard everyones wants :) . Now no one has to jump ship and learn a different diesel :D . Sam.

Edit : spelling correction.

I dont' know... that rear door glass looks way too small to be a fullsize. I think they are some where in between. My PSD glass looks a lot bigger than that... . time will tell... CJ

The rear door is smaller than front door but looks like enough door to get in and out of.

On two door cars they have a long (length) front door ( no rear of course), on four door cars the front and rear doors are about same size but the front doors are shorter than its two door brother.

I liked the text part where Dodge wants the cusumers know they still make a reliable work truck. But according to a statement by the editor in the TDR in the warranty book if you use the truck for work they can void warranty.

I told them what I was my using truck(work) for they always honored the warranty.

Looking carefully at the pic of the white std cab, peeking at the stuff you CAN see through the screen and the shapes that can't be (or aren't hidden), and comparing it to the 2002 on the Dodge website, I have the following observations:

The headlamps and shape of the grill opening are shared with the 1/2 ton.

The top of the grill/leading edge of the hood are big. Like the GMs, taller in the air.

The front fenders might be shared, they are close.

The cabs (including the dinky rear doors) are the same. Hopefully there will be a CREWCAB option available at some time. The folks that call the shots at DC don't seem to grasp that they are losing a considerable number of sales because of this!

The front splashpan (it isn't strong enough to be considered a BUMPER) is also "big" and sticks out farther and has a larger air opening.

I don't know about you guys but I'm fairly disappointed. After taking the lead in '94 and defining what GM and Ford HDs look like today, DC seems to have gone back to "follow the leader" in styling. Too bad, a powerwagon would have knocked 'em dead. Good thing they didn't think this way in the early 90's.

The only hope I'm holding out is that these ARE 1/2 ton bodies with a couple mods to make them work with the large engines and all they were doing when the pics were taken was powertrain and suspension testing.

On a positive note, I was told by a friend who works at Cummins that the 2003 engine will put the Dodge back in the lead for power.

Sorry so long.

Crew Cab --NOT!

The rear doors look to be identical to those on the new 2002 half-tons. That is, the current quad cab plus three inches (taken from the bed length on the halvers. . ). This is a feeble attempt at passifying those who must have a real 5-6 passenger hauler. I hope DC isn't trying to pass this off as a true Crew Cab. It's just a slightly larger extended cab. :( It looks like I may be calling the 4-door conversion companies.

I looked and looked at these pics... I still can't tell if it is a true crew cab or just an extra 3 inches... For dodge's sake, I hope it is not the latter. I have no interest in buying a crewcab, I just want dodge to be competitive.

Wouldn't it be nice if Diamler sent the first unwrapped photos to the TDR? YEA RIGHT, like that'll happen, and oh yeah, that cab is the exact duplicate of the one on the half ton, and here i thought DC had all their Sh$T together, guess not...

I reread issue 24 (spring 1999) , Dodge Concept Truck (Powerwagon) by Don Bunn. Wow. If DC would have read that then, they wouldn't be doing this now. Mabe it is DC "knowing" what we want better than we do? (ala Microsoft).

Maybe if we start a chant?

EVERYBODY!

POWERWAGON!

POWERWAGON!

POWERWAGON!

PERSONALLY, *I* would PREFER a somewhat narrower rear door on the new Dodge - while additional seating and rear access are welcome, the substantially LONGER cab when combined with a full-sized bed makes for a LOOOONG truck and a large turning circle. Poor manueverability with such a truck when used as a tow vehicle for RVs in crowded campgrounds and tight spaces is a definite NEGATIVE for folks like me. Some of the crewcab Fords I have seen look like freight trains in regard to length, and *I* would sure hate to trying to herd one along with my trailer in MANY of the campgrounds we frequent... :(

disapointed in DC

 If this is there version of a "Crew Cab" we may want to start buying alot of spare parts for our trucks because I think these are going to fail in the market place, and DC is going to close most of Dodge down due to being unprofitable.

What a shame, shame on DC for doing this on the cheap and not producing a true four door. I love my Dodge Ram and the Cummins that resides under her hood, but DC is putting the american market to shame with it's european mentality. It's time for the German appointed CEO to go home and let an American Truck owner run the American truck division, then maybe, just maybe Dodge will listen and be king of the light/medium duty trucks again.

Paul

What other diesel?

I read the article that came with these pictures and about half way down it says

"... we also know that Cummins will supply its torque-rich diesel engines for the 2500 and 3500 models. Daimler Chrysler also has a quite-powerful diesel ready in the wings. With either powerplant, expect some serious power to be available for pulling, pushing, or just plain hauling. "

What's the specs on this "Diesel in the wings"?

Four wheel steering

I agree with the last post with regards to LOOONG truck and wide turning radius. Check out the GMC Sierra for 2002. They are going to use electronic four wheel steering. A full size crew cab with long bed, diesel, and four wheel steering sounds pretty good. Could be complicated... . Wait and see I guess.

Fellow Rammers:

I'm witholding judgement on the HD crew cab until I can see it in person and sit in the back seat. My wife and I were paid by DC to review 3 prototype full-size Ram crew cabs in Fall '97. They were full scale models (no engines, interiors etc. . ) but they all were cool. All had big, powerful headlights (even better than the sports). Not bad for being paid $75 each for 3 hours of "work. ":D

As it turned out, they (DC) took the front of one proto type and mated it with the rear of another prototype and ended up with the 2002.

We also previewed some neat features, like a foldout storage compartment built into the lower front of the bed, just like the Ford super camper specials in the 70s. They asked if we would pay $120 for it. Yep!;)

Can't wait to ride in one.
