Rattlin_Ram has a good thing in his boost pressure checker. Don't let him down play it. The thing works like a charm. I'm hoping boondock has found something he can easily correct. Boondock's truck is running quite strong now and fixing the boost leak should make it even stronger! According to Piers, the 1997 5-speed has, among other things, better air flow, a better cam, and a better pump than my 1997 auto. Which may explain why my truck can't keep up (even with my DDIIs). :(

I called Piers (again ;) ) yesterday and the hole in my boost elbow is designed to bleed off air. If I understand it correctly, the hole in the boost elbow is what allows the waste gate to do its thing for more boost. Bottom line, I don't think I have a boost leak. Will I ever see 300hp?

T-bone, you should be at 325-350 with that combo! That is one of the best setup's to run, I just did a 98' auto like that but with stock injectors and it will make about 1300-1350 EGT's (customer wanted it that hot) so it's time for a housing.

A 5 speed truck with that setup will make plasma torch EGT's, if it won't it's not setup right or not that hot!

Hi Jim,

I was really hoping to be at those numbers too. But, it just ain’t happening. I’ve checked for boost leaks and fuel pressure is good. I’ve got an AFE stage 2, but stock exhaust. I’m hoping that taking care of my cat will help some. I’m just not sure it will allow me 100 more hp. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

T-Bone

Could there be an air leak in a fuel line so even with good pressure there is air in the fuel? Maybe bad fuel? Jordan

Hi Jordan,

That is a definite possibility. I still have the stock fuel lines at 140k miles. Not sure how to check this other than just replace them. Is replacing them my only option?

Rattlin_Ram, thanks for all your help. It's greatly appreciated (and the pizza was good too!). Let me know if you have some time and I'll swing by and we can take a look at this governor arm thing. Even if you don't have time, let me know and I will drop your boost pressure tester and I’ll bring that extra front bumper.

I spoke with Jim Fulmer today (thanks Jim!) and he said next thing to eliminate is the cat. Just need to find someone local to get it done.

To check for air in the fuel I have heard of using a piece of clear line between the filter and injection pump and look for bubbles. Dont mistake any air in the lines as the air from putting the clear line on. Bleed it as best you can or run it a bit to get the initial air out. Jordan

Jordan,

Thanks for the tip! I have the Prime-loc relocator so I will need to check and see where I can replace what. If I get a chance to do this, I'll post what I find.
