Not too bad! The instructions are good. I marked the adjustment nuts. The marks along with the caliper measurement took the guesswork out of getting things back together right. Craig

To all those sitting on the fence, this thread should help you make your decision to pick up this kit A. S. A. P. !

Just like Piers and everyone else said..... it makes a WORLD of difference... .

I told a guy that if I would have known about this kit when I first bought my truck I would have bought a governor spring kit from Piers before I bought my 1st tank of diesel fuel... . it's that good!

Matt - very happy with Piers' Governor Spring Kit

#1 BOMB......i wish......!

If I had a 12v, I think the gov spring kit would almost HAVE to be first. I have done some research on 12v's and find most people think it is the first proper BOMB for a 12v.

JUST DO IT!!!:p

I too have 4. 10:1 gears in my truck... . the only way it will over rev is if you want it to... . I've seen 3500rpm with my foot on the floor... I wouldn't consider that over-revving.

Over 3400rpm you should consider installing some stiffer exhaust valve springs... which can be purchased from Piers... .

Some have posted complaining about the big rpm drop when shifting from 3rd to 4th with their 5-speed trucks. The gov. spring kit allows you stretch out 3rd gear so the rev drop becomes a non-issue. Feels as strong at 3000 as it does at 2000 rpm. The truck is MUCH more enjoyable to drive with the spring kit!

329,485 miles

I've been thinking about a 3k governor kit but am kind of worried because of two things:

1. One of my friends had a 96 over at his place that he was thinking of buying. It had a 4K kit in it and got rapped tight once and It started knocking in one of the cylinders. So he was just going to buy it for parts. Of course HE will never install a gov kit because of that, but I still want one because my dad's 98. 4 pulls hard up to 2800-2900 (thats factory too) and that is nice compared to my 2300 before fuel cut off starts.

2. My pickup has 329,485 miles on it as I type this and I worry about that being combined with the kit.

So im asking your opinions on this because i really want a governor kit but don't want to gernade my awsome motor.

Thanks Brian

Does anyone know how many horsepower the 3000k springs add. I did mine at the same time as the TST #6 plate and it sure feels like more than 230hp. Have the shift point at 2950 - 3000 and it runs strong even with the stock transmission and TC.

Also, read that the Cummins has a harmonic resonance condition at 4100 rpm, so don't go there.

I'm up in the air over the 3K kit or the 4K kit. My truck already goes to 3K (actually had it to 3300) in stock form.

Fuel starts to cut back at about 2800. It sounds like the 3K kit will take you well beyond 3K??

My question is, would I be best just to go to the 4K kit?

At what point is the 3K kit starting to de-fuel? I know much has to do with the way it's tuned in.

TIA

Eric

I can now hit 3500 rpm with no problem. Before the kit I could make it to 3000 unloaded but the engine was just coasting after you passed 2700. Towing 8000 lbs. , I was looking for the next gear at 2600. Being able to shift at 3k+ you can stay in the torque "sweet spot" much more easily.

I notice that a few of you can pull up to almost 3k stock. 2. 6k is all I can get with it floored; are there any adjustments that can be done to get just a few more RPM's without the kit.

SIDE NOTE; no load max speed for mine is 3K you can feel the fuel cutting back at around 2. 3K loaded.

95 4x4 auto

I think these things come all over the place from the factory. A buddy and I both have 97 automatics. Similar equipped, etc. Only running gear difference is 4. 10 and 3. 54 gears. when both were stock I could get to 3000 rpm on flat level ground in 3rd locked, using the OD button. It would start to defuel about 2700 or so. His truck would not go over 2750 and start defueling around 2500.

My friends 98 12valve all stocker starts falling on its face at 2200. With the auto it's a real pig. I'm calling Piers tomorrow for a 3k kit for him. Anyone have a used #8 plate for sale. I think he needs it real bad.

I guess the stock springs aren't good for more rpm without screwing up other papameters. The only down side but not necessarily bad is the fueling is way more aggressive at low and mid range. Top end is better but not the same wild feeling as low and mid range. My top end feels relatively dead. I had to hook up the trailer and pull some hills to be sure it was still OK. My egt is low(PDR HX35/14) and the plate is considerably forward. Nobody makes the plate I want, so it's off to the surface grinder some day! Craig

It seems to me the older trucks like my '94 are the low rev'ers. PLUS, the springs in the govenor get weaker as they age and the r's go down. My truck would only rev to 2,200 before the injector pump was rebuilt. After the rebuild, the r's increased to 2,500 because the stock govenor springs were shimmed/replaced. The Piers springs, especially the smallest inner spring is much stiffer than the factory spring, so BAM, big RPM's for the first time in my '94! I can't tell you how much easier and more enjoyable the truck is to drive now.
