2004 exhaust brake install tips

I did the install of my Piers turbo today. It took about and hour and a half. Basic automotive r&r skills. Nothing to worry about really. Only thing was the exhaust elbow had a couple of alignment pins and one didn't line up. I just pulled it out and it is great.

First impressions seem to be good. I have orders not to go over 20+ PSI of boost for two hunderd miles. I think that is the hardest thing about installing it. So far boost #s seem to be lower at cruise and EGT's are lower too. I am going on a trip tomorrow to Yuma and it will be broken in by Yuma. I will post when I get home about how it does on the Hi side of EGT woes... .

Well guys,

I have noticed that spool up is very quick. Cool down is about the same as before. I have not been able to floor it. I only have 50 miles on it and it needs a good break in. I will try to put some miles on it tomorrow. I will post for sure.....

I just got home from a 600 mile lap of the So Cal desert. Plenty of easy miles on the turbo. Tonight on the way home, I had a lot of fun. For the last 35 miles a friend of mine ( Ford owner ) and I raced up the hill from the lower desert. I had it floored, up hill, and let it scream. The highest temps I could see were 1300*. Before I could kill 1450*. That is with the DDIII's, and EZ on level 4. I had some fun it 4th gear and never hit more than 1200*. Bottem end response and spool up is great. This thing pulls harder now on top too. It is a great turbo for the mild bombers. I still think I will need a bigger one but this is great for now. For three and a half dollars it is well worth the money. Max boost is hovering at 38 psi and spool up is quick. Many thanks go out to Fred Swanson for lending me a turbo to have built.

Hey Greg I told you that You would like it :D

I have done a few ,even with the box off it makes a nice improvement. If it were me I would change out the manifold at the same time. Look at cylinders 4 & 5 and you will see what I am talking about.

I'm beginning to have second thoughts about getting a TST. Maybe I should get something like the Quadzilla and a Piers turbo instead? I'd be into it for pretty close to the same money.

I have no expierence with the quadzilla box. I do know that the DD EZ and DD injectors are about the smoothest power available. Combine that with a turbo for management of EGT's and it is an unbeliveable combo.

Bob,

It is a money thing right now. Soon--- soon.

Greg I'm glad to hear the turbo is working good for you. It's doing exactly as designed. . . takes the edge off the EGTs and lets things breathe a little better on the intake side. All for 3-1/2 bills. Like I've said it's not the final answer for a lot of people but a decent improvement over the sorry stock turbo. A "get me by" turbo :)

Prarie Dog I'm not in any hurry to get a TST box. I would look around for an EZ, there's quite a few of them out there. The EZ drives great and I think you'd like it a lot. I tried one, drives nicer than my Bullydog Box. Get an EZ and a Piers turbo and I promise you it'll put a :D :D :D on your face!

PD.

If you are worried about the EZ being a pressure box don't. Cummins raised fuel pressures on the 600 trucks 2000 psi at idle.

Vaughn,

I am very happy with this new turbo. It works great for me. Even with the big shower heads, I don't really have any issues with EGT's until about 90 mph... :--)

I ran the quadzilla box for a while and liked it. I recently sold it to a friend so I could buy the new TST box. I also had the EZ for a while. Both were nice power adders. The quadzilla seemed like it made the injections get louder than the EZ did though

XCX,

THe turbo is great. EGT's are way more controlable. At cruise speeds the egt's are down over 250* from before. boost is faster, and helps with egt's more. The funniest thing is on a 500 mile trip, I saw 1. 2 mpg better, that was at speeds in excess of 90 mph. I am interested to see how it does next week. I have a trip planned to Pheonix. 500 miles round trip. My wife will be there so 100 mph bursts aren't allowed. Mileage should be great...

Greg

what kind of mods are they making to the turbo?

Hopefully my plans for the exhaust, intake, juice, injectors, clutch and this turbo will be enough for me.
