Greetings 12 valvers!!

Thought I'd share a little info on Piers cam. I put a PDR cam in my truck when the Piers ported head went on about a month ago. Soon after that, on went the PDR hx-40. My point is, all the changes in the truck are not just from the cam alone. I did some comparisons with the hx-35/16 before I put the 40 on.

The spool up time with the hx-35/16 before/after the cam and head installation was a VERY dramatic difference. The bottom end response was like having a 12cm housing again. The cruise egt's dropped 200+ degrees, idle egt dropped 50 degrees and the idle cool down time to 300 degrees or less is quite a bit faster. Top end egt's are still up there, but not till the top of third gear and not until 3300+ rpm in fourth. This is all with the hx35/16.

Of course, I HAD to have a PDRhx-40/16, just to help finance Piers trip to Muncie. The 40 made a BIG change in the seat of the pants feel. There is some lag to about 1500rpm, 10 pounds boost to 1700, then the boost guage climbs as fast as the tach, up to 38-40 pounds. There is one small puff of black smoke when you hit it, then the smoke turns to gray, by 3000-3200 there is NO smoke in the mirrors! No smoke must mean I'm actually burning the fuel from the #10 plate and 370 injectors. The egt's will hit 1500 at the end of third(3600) and about 3300+ in fourth. Kind of a novelty to be able to USE the power and not back off so soon.

I've checked the mileage on two tanks of fuel , so far a little more than two mpg better than before. This is with plenty of full throttle runs. If driven right(whatever that is), I would estimate closer to three mpg better, which would be 21+ mpg in everyday driving, not expressway only.

Speaking of full throttle runs, I went to Black Mountain Diesel's grand opening today. Met some great folks, saw some awsome trucks (all Dodge!) and had a good afternoon. You know what happens when Cummins owners get together, lotsa black smoke and plenty of rubber left on the road.

Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

See y'all at the dyno at Scheid's in August.

Thanks Billy for the PDR info, as I said before that guy just keeps re-writing the books and he does it cause he never quits thinking, this will but another PDR invention for us the wrench turners. PDR is full of allot of good people from Al who knows more than we think, to the guys in the back that are working and learning to Louise and the girls up front that keep it Rollin' and answer our questions and calls. What a better place to spend our money:D

PDR and the folks flat rock!

You're right on the money Jim-I have my name on the waiting list for a cam which I think will complement the PDR Super40/16 that I have on order right now! Great place to do business with... ... .

I hear what you are saying, I just ordered injectors and I have been thinking allot about the cam lately, I'm wondering if they want me to R&D it with a little setup, guess I'll have to ask. When you get your cam in Post some info about it!

Jim

I think it'll be a while-unless anyone has phoned since Thursday afternoon I'm on the bottom of the list! :D My results probably won't be applicable on this side of the board-I have 12 too many valves to really be spending time over here :) but I wanted to chime in in support of Piers and the crew at PDR..... If I get results even remotely close to what Cousin Billy has posted I'll be all :D :D :D !

Jim is right on the money :)

I just wish my uncle was as cool as uncle billy ;)

Cam etc. results

Just so I don't mislead anyone, I have a #10 TST plate in my truck about two-thirds of the way forward, in my afc, the heavier spring of the two and the star wheel out about twelve clicks from the bottom. I'm going to experiment more with plate position and afc adjustments just to see how hot for how long this combination works. Seems to me since I now have about 30% of the smoke I had before(really!), I must be burning a lot more inside the engine instead of blowing it out on the poor souls who dared to follow closer than a quarter mile behind me in the past. I want to see what adjusting and fine tuning(read time consuming) my current set up will teach me so I can share the info with others.

Next step has to be a s***** pump  from Piers, maybe before dyno time at Scheid's big event. Did you read that Piers?

If it wasn't for people like Piers and MANY, MANY others sharing their knowledge and experiences with everybody, where would most of us be at now?

Forrest

Little doubt I will try a #0 plate sooner or later. Probably later because I want to experiment with the 10 for a week or so, then let everyone know the results. I might be wrong (happened one other time), but there are probably more of us out there with #10 plates than there are #0 plates.

I'll talk to Piers this week to pick his brain a little and see if he thinks I might need a "custom" plate. He might tell us everything we know, but we'll never know everything he knows and probably don't need to!

I'd like to see what I can get out of a basically stock pump before I go to something I really don't need. Like any of us really "need" more power! All my pump has is a plate, 4000 springs and afc spring kit.

Like it has been said many times before, Piers Diesel Research sets new standards when it comes to customer service and willingness to go the extra mile to help ALL customers, no matter how much they are spending.

12 VALVES FOREVER !!!!!

#10 PLATE ADJUSTMENT

I had some interesting and kinda confusing results from moving my #10 plate all the way forward(was at about two-thirds forward). I saw little if any change in seat of the pants feel, but the egt change was odd to me.

Top of third gear at 3400 rpm, egt at 1250 consistently. Go to fourth, egt won't hit 1500 till 3500 at around 92-94 mph.

Before I moved the plate, I could always hit 1500 in third gear and of course in fourth. I always thought the further forward the plate, more heat was the result. I knew the performance might not change, but the egt change was a surprise to me.

I'm gonna put in a "custom" ground plate this week (equal to a #0 I think) and see what happens. If it will still take the heat even close to this well, we'll try 191 delivery valves next.

Anybody got any ideas?

If you look @ the #10, it defuels @ the top end. As the rack moves forward, it 'tips forward'. I wonder if the lower EGT is because as the top of the rack is hitting that top end defueling portion of the plate, i. e. wonder if it's not allowing it to travel forward all the way.

That won't be a problem with the #0.

Piers showed us all some interesting things up in Calgary on the effects of moving the plates forward. I would guess that moving the plate all the way forward has changed the rocker adjustment to the point where it isn't fuel like it was with it just slightly forward. Do the rocker adjustment and I'll bet your power and heat will be right back it not more.

Plate moving

Thenks fellas,

I appreciate the responses to my posts. Piers has explained to me in the past what the common effects of sliding the plate full forward are. The main reason I tried this is because it costs nothing and also because many people think further forward is better.

By the way, I did re-adjust the rocker lever after moving the plate full forward. I thank you all for the thoughts.

Should have the other plate ready by Wednesday.

It shure is odd not seeing a huge, long cloud of thick black smoke behind me anymore. I'll probably add more fuel to it till I screw something up. I've already got a Con OFE clutch slippin in fourth gear(it's got about 1300 miles on it).

Thanks again gang!

Billy:

It was great to have met you at the Black Mountain Diesel

Grand Opening last weekend!! Thanks alot for the ride

in your truck!!

I can definitely say that everything "Cousin Billy" says

about his truck is "right on!!" The truck has ALOT of

power, spools up fast and definitely doesn't have the

EGT problem my truck does!! What amazed me was the

lack of smoke under hard acceleration!! The Piers cam

definitely rocks!!! I definitely need one!!!:D

Billy, thanks again!!! You have one great running

truck there!!
