So I had to replace my cracked head in March, and decided to undertake it myself. I learned a lot but had a chronic problem that I was unable to solve, and after replacing the head gasket a couple more times, I took it to PDR - (604) 853-9396. They solved the problem and did a little of that tuning Piers is known for... ;)

Thanks Piers and co for getting my truck back on the road (and track! ). :) It's running great; they really did right by me yet again!

Man, I wish I lived closer to Vancouver. I would be at that shop everyday. Might just have to take a road trip and get my head done by Peirs as well since they are the best in the business. :D

Road trip

Hey JGheen ... go for the road trip guy. :)

I've done 2 now. Set up an appointment on Monday. From my digs, 2 days. Leave on Sat morning early, get to the other side of Portland. Easy drive into BC on Sunday afternoon.

My last run was head o-ringing & the pump hit the calibration stand.

Yeah, the road trip seems very worth it, Forrest. Just need to set aside a goods amount of time to do it. Gonna be throwing down some cash for the fuel up there, as well as the $$ for the bombing mods. How much do they charge for the labor of pulling the head, o-ringing it, etc. ?? Is it hourly or is it a flat rate for the job being performed??

Head gaskets...

They re-O-ringed my block; one had started to lift, I had tapped it back down but it didn't work. They also said my torque wrench was not accurate. I guess my torque was way low... Better get my wrench calibrated, eh?

I've raced, and romped on it all week, so it's actually fixed now. :D

Matt, I got a stock head and had it decked and a valve job done. Bit of porting around the valves is all...

Rhonda: That's cool... at least you know its good and flat... and it has always been said that a little porting goes a long way.

Did you backcut the valves? (I promise to stop answering questions now... :) )

Matt

Matt, allow me to display my ignorance once again :)rolleyes: ) by asking what "backcutting" is. The machine shop guy showed me what he planned to do, and afterward what he did, but I don't have anything to compare it too. My memory is not exactly stellar, but if you jog it for me, I may remember.

I've heard that I could lose some compression (due to increased air flow) with the valve porting, and my 1/4 mile times are off, but in theory they're sealing better than in the past, and my boost is excellent, so I dunno.

Any hints or information?

Rhonda:

Here's a picture of a backcut 6BT valve from our friend Timo's project in Finland #ad

Notice how the seat (where the valve seals against the head... ) smoothly transitions to the rest of the valve - all the way to the valve stem. Doing this in conjunction with a multi-angle valve job helps with airflow...

Normally, there's a rather abrupt angle between the valve seat area of the valve and the rest of it...

Are your EGT's lower than they were before the recent work? If so, it's time to add more fuel.

Matt
