transmission wakeup call

Finally installed Piers new "external" wastegate, to compliment the new HX-50 hybrid turbo. This is a neat modification of the ATS 3-pc manifold, which incorporates a riser on top of the exhaust flange of the manifold. This is not a spacer, it is a fabricated machined riser which the external wastegate is attached. The advantage is, unlike other external wastegates, it doesn't interfere with the position of the turbo and the exhaust down pipe. It can be used with any of Piers non-wastegated turbos, or wastegated turbos if inclined. The external wastegate is spring loaded, and with the right spring combination, can be easily adjusted to open at the appropriate drive pressure for the turbo you are running. The one on my truck is set to open at 48PSI and fully open at 56PSI. . i:cool:

Pigpen is running one and with the Hx55 I couldn't hear it pop off over the 747 sounding turbo. Does it Pop off when sudden pressure spikes occur AKA anti Bark

Toolman... It will open (start) every so slightly at what ever pressure you want it to open. I haven't really gotten it to fully open yet, as just even a slight opening allows the drives pressures to equal immediately. Kinda like a whooosh sound of air. It will not stop turbo bark if you suddenly let off pedal, because in my case the wastegate will immediately close at 49 PSI. I am working on a simple blow off valve that will solve that problem for everyone.

thekidfan... The manifold is new, although only the center section has been modified, you can't get your old one apart to only change out the center section. Piers is making a great deal on this set-up . As far as the coating, it is VHT paint coating Hi-temp 1500*+ and cost approx. $9. 50 per can. I can do maybe 3-4 manifolds with one can. If surface is clean it won't peal off. Need to run engine for about 2-3 hrs. normal driving at 650-750* to fully cure, and works great.

This set-up can also be used for Piers twin turbos.

P. S. I now have a 1-year old ATS power coated manifold for sale.

:D :D

Toolman. . the bottom pic you pulled out of my pics is not the one on the ATS manifold. It was a prototype, and wouldn't hold up to the vibration etc. , and interfered with clearance. The correct pic is the one above which exits through the center of the manifold. I don't have it "dumping" into the exhaust. You can adjust the wastegate at 90* angles, so I pointed it to the air-filter where it won't hurt anything. You can also point it to the rear or what-ever.

Steve

As far as a blow off valve, not putting BD down or anything, will cost me around $150. As soon as I work out one small part?

wastegate

I don't want to sound foolish but WHY are you dumping

1000 deg exh. dirrectly into the engine compartment?

(and believe me thats what your doing. ) thats just asking for trouble. i know much about the gate as i've been using one for a while on my twins. unless PT or piers came up w/ a heaverier

spring that thing only has an 18 lb spring in it. ( and last i talked to PT they had'nt yet) just wondering. .

Proram... appreciate your concern, however, a lot of guys out here do it ! What kind of trouble are you refering too? And #2 as far as the spring question, I have a larger spring and able to have the wastegate open at 48psi. No brainer there!

Steve

Oh, I forgot ... before the wastegate, I had to hold the boost to 52psi. Drive pressure was probably higher.

Is it possible to route the exhaust to the downpipe like most external wastegates? The EGR system on my VW comes to mind when I visualize the plumbing. Like a 1" or so tubing with flexible joints to route it down where it needs to go.

I have Haisley's Hybrid HX-50 and have been burying the 60lb boost gauge for some time now. Could you explain the above quote on how you hold the boost to 52 lbs without a wastegate. Also anyone know the specs on the HX-50 as far as what pressure does it lose its effeciency? (52#)? Any other info you could throw in would be appreciated. Thanks Kirk

Kaptn... In order to hold boost to 52psi, I had to watch carefully and not ram-it WOT. Another thing, I fabricated a blow off valve set at 57psi boost after the turbo as a precaution. At 5700' its pretty hard to get over 55psi of boost. As Piers has determined, you can run the HX-50 hybrid 50psi all day long. 50-55psi occasionally, 55 + your in the "watch-out area" and danger of head gasket failure, unless O-ringed. I'm not familiar with the Hasiley, but I won't run it pass the above boost levels unless the manufacture/builder says so and will warranty it.
