I have one of these turbos , probably one of the first ones Piers had. I originally bought it for my '96, but now it's on my '01 HO. I have a 16cm non-wastegated exhaust. This turbo has posted 36#s of boost, so far. Lack of clutch has kept me from seeing any real numbers from this setup. I hope to rectify that situation in the next month or so.
The stock turbo on the 98. 5-2002 manual trucks and the 98. 5-2000 auto trucks was an HX35 with a wastegate (set at 21). The 2001-2002 automatic trucks have an HY35 tubo that is wastegated also (set at 21). The HO trucks all have HX35's that are wastegated at 26 I believe.
If you have an HX35 then yes you can change the housings on the trubo fairly easily. There is really no advantage unless you are BOMBing. .
