Whats the best way to get the pilot bearing out? It moves forwward but wont come back. If I take flywheel off can I get to the front of it and tap it out?? thanks

On 1 occasion I removed my oil pilot bearing (bushing) by pumping the cavity behind the bearing full of grease then using a spare input shaft or other suitable device and starting it in the pilot hole then hitting it with a mallet. The hydraulic pressure should force the old bearing out. Mite not work with a ball bearing, it will blow the seals out.

The hole in the flywheel is straight through with no shoulder. I have used a socket and hammer to press the bearing out. You can replace it with a stock bearing or with a bronze bushing having 1” OD and . 75” ID, about 1” long. It is best to use new flywheel bolts from Cummins, part number 3901395, with blue Loctite. Re-use the flat washers with the more rounded side toward the bolt, and torque to 101 ft-lb. Have the mating surfaces on the flywheel to crank clean and dry.
