I have got a 98 4x4 that the rearend pinion seal is leaking, when replacing is just the seal needed,is the nut reusable? And what is the torque spec on the nut? Thanks Jason

Jason,

At one time I was looking into changing the rear end gears on mine and seems to me the pinion nut requires about 350 ft/lb of torque. I'll confirm that as soon as I get a chance to look at my manual.

Seal Saver

Mine needed a repair sleeve on the yoke to fix the leak. It wore a groove where the seal rubs deep enough that just a new seal would not fix the problem. You will probably need a puller to remove the yoke once you remove the nut. Mine was very tight. I don't know the torque spec for the nut but I know it is about all a 1/2 in. drive impact can do to remove it! Check your yoke for a groove and put a repair sleeve on it if it is, otherwise you will most likely still have a leak.

Very important... Make sure you have the puller on hand for that yoke. Any type of pounding/beating will just weaken the yoke. I found out the hard way! While I was at it, I went ahead and replaced the U joint with one that has a zerk fitting - preventive maintenance?

The torque spec depends on the rearend your truck has. Dana 80 (2500 manual trans and all 3500's) requires 450 ft-lb. The 70 (2500 automatic trans) is less.

BUT, mark the relationship of the nut on the pinion shaft before you remove it. When you reinstall it, tighten it SLIGHTLY past the orginal point. This does work on the 80, I think it works on the 70. Doesn't work on any rear end with a crush sleave type set up.
