I measured about 1/8” of side-to-side slop in my pitman arm shaft, which translated into about 4” of steering wheel slop. This was done by crawling under the truck and turning the steering shaft with one hand while watching the pitman arm, no dial indicator needed. At that time my truck had less than 30K miles and bringing it into the dealer yielded “They all do that and your truck is better than most. ” It was a few years latter I added the DSS. Repeating the test shows the new ball bearing race added to the pitman shaft stopped all slop and I now have about 1½” play in the wheel due to slop in the steering box. In my opinion it was a worthwhile upgrade.
