I'm in the process of installing a 6'' superlift on my 03 ctd, everything is finished except replacing the drop pitman arm. I can't get the factory arm loose. I have tried a heavy duty puller with a big impact, and big breaker bar, it won't even budge.

put a good amount of pressure on the pushing bolt ,then give the head of that bolt a good rap with a hammer, retighten bolt and repeat

Just did this on an 07. After a few hours on it with a puller, decided to heat it up with a torch. Put a torch to it for a few minutes, came right off with the puller. (If you don't have a torch, you could use a MAPP gas torch from lowes, you just might have to give it an extra couple minutes).

My experience with the pitman arms on the Rams, you need to put the puller on it and crank it tight, take a good sized hammer and hit the side of the pitman arm where it connects to the steering box, crank on the puller some more, hit with the hammer again. Ive had to do this on several Rams. Sometimes took 20 minutes. When it lets loose, almost sounds like a shotgun going off.

Ditto above, hit side, wrench a little, hit side, wrench, etc. . Did last week. Thought I was going to break my very expensive $6. 00 Harbor Freight puller. But it finally popped loose.

I soaked mine in pb blaster at beginning of the project and then a few more times came right off my 04 couple weeks ago I didn't want to use heat

Yeah, I tried all that on this 07. I think it was pressed on too far at the factory, couldn't get the puller in there. Had to grind the tool down to make it fit. Soaked it in pb, hit it with a 4lb hammer... . nothin... took the torch #@$%!

The Snap On pitman arm puller is the only way to go. If you dig around you might find a used one on e-bay for around $75.

I agree Keg, the Sanp-On pitman arm puller is the greatest !. Right tool for the right job. Put it on and wind it off. Not cheap though.

Mine took an industrial puller and a cut-off wheel and chisel. I wasn't going to heat my steering so I put all the presssure I could untill the puller started to bend, then cut most of the way through it then worked on it with a large chisel(basicly) untill I got the forementioned "shotgun going off. " It actually chipped the concrete when it shot off!

Who Me?

:-laf I see a few people I wouldn't let near any of my machinery

Bob

Who, us cutters? I figured I wasn't needing the part anymore, ever, so why not make it easier. That, and I had planned on keeping it, along with everything else stock, but after trying to get it off, workign on something else then going back to it again, repeatedly for about 2 hours, and it was the only thing left, I saud the heck with it.

Can some one post the Snap-On pitman arm puller's part number, I know is not the CJ115 because that is what I used to separate what I call the drag link. The only other Snap-On puller I've seen that could be the one is CJ119, which I'm told OTC has an identical version for less money.

I cant believe how much trouble some folks have with these things. Mine practically lept off the sector shaft when I used my wimpy Harbor Freight type puller on it. Guess I was just lucky for once!

I have changed out way too many steering gears and steering linkages on the 3rd gens. I would say that over half I see the pitman arm was on the shaft farther than neccesary and of course that makes it come off that much harder. I use a puller from miller tool,it has been a real trooper. Yes it shows a good amount of wear but it has been able to remove all that it has attemped.
