Travel trailer tire ??

Soft sided camper???

If your taking a cammper not a trailer, you can take the ferry system from anchorage to seattle. The trip through alaska by water is great, and the inside passage through canada is breathtaking(do it almost every year coming home from fishing).

Taking a 19 foot camper trailer. It will be a long drive. But, thats OK. I enjoy long drives on the road. And beautiful country makes it all the better. ( I get claustrophobic on long boat trips).

When and if you're in Hyder don't forget to have lunch at the School Bus. You can eat outside and watch the eagles playing in the sky if you're lucky.

Great country, we made the trip in 2005. Lost no tires and only had to do a rear break job in Anchorage due to a leaking seal. Roads are better up there than in San Bernardino, CA. We only wished we had gone over the Top of The World. If you do go over it, they say to drive the road for what it is, not a freeway or a race track and enjoy the views.

Can you take a 5th wheel on the Inside Passage ship? What does it cost?

Yes you can take a trailer, but they charge by the foot. Did a quick online check and it looks like if you booked a ticket with an overall length of 50 feet (truck and trailer), you'd be looking at about $2300 from Bellingham to Haines for the truck, trailer and two passengers in June.

Here is the webpage for the Alaska Marine Highway.

I just did a quick lookup, so there may be better prices to be had. My understanding is that for RVs you have to book fairly early because the ferries run pretty full for the summer.

Thanks Paul. Wow, that's a little spendy. We plan to make another trip in 2008, but next time with a 27" 5th wheel. We will drive both ways.

Definitely drive the Top of the World Highway from Chicken to the Yukon River where you have to cross the river on the ferry to Dawson City, YT. It's well worth it! Plan to spend a night in Chicken. Susan owns the local tourist shop, cafe and an interesting bar.

Dawson City is an interesting place to spend a couple of nights and see the town. There is a good dirt road that goes waaaay above Dawson City and is a spectacular place to see the sunset which lasts a few minutes and occurs very early in the morning, like 1-2 a. m.

Enjoy!

Larv, We really enjoyed the Top of the World Hwy from Dawson City through Chicken and into Tok, even though we ran into so much rain and mud. When we got into Tok you couldn't see what color my truck and camper were. Now, the Top of the World Hwy from Whitehorse to Dawson City wasn't as spectacular and it was way too long and rough. On our next trip in 2008, we will go to Tok and come into Dawson City and go out the same way. We loved the Mighty Yukon River.

Grizzly, we took the Cassiar Hwy on the return trip home and talk about not knowing the color of our truck and TT! Fortunately, there waa a dude in Hyder who spent the summers there pressure washing trucks and TTs. He took about 30 mins but it was the best $50 I ever spent! Plus the drive from Hyder down into WA was spectacular! A total surprise to us. I plan to do it again, maybe in '08.

What month in 08 are you going? We plan on caravaning with other TDR members. On the way up, we plan on going into Skagway and take the catamaran to Juneau, then Juneau to Haines, then back to Skagway, then Skagway to Tok, then Chicken and Dawson City, then back to Tok, then Fairbanks, Denali NP and so on.

We don't know exactly when we're going yet. I'm trying to put together a fly-in moose hunt out of Tok, probably will be in mid to late Sept. We'll probably leave here late July/early August, I'm guessing... ... . Do the vacation thing until time for the hunt. This all depends on how much $$$ I can put away between now and then!

Our Alaskan Adventure in 2005 was great.

TRat,

You will enjoy your travel to Alaska. We spent two months in Alaska in 2005 and still talk about it with anyone who will listen. Our 2004 Ram with CTD 5. 9L and 13,000 fifth wheel was a good team. We had no trouble except one nail in a tire on our fifth wheel. Our fifth wheel was a little heavy but made our evenings very comfortable. You will see every size of RV in Alaska

Traveling slow and being alert is a necessity.

We have posted a lot of information and photographs on our personal Web site at www.RVtowster.com of our journey. Go to the PRIOR DESTINATIONS page and then ALASKA 2005. One of the pages gives suggestions for those preparing for their Alaskan Adventure.

I suggest you travel from Dawson City over the Top of the World Highway to Chicken to fully appreciate your arrival in Alaska. After that ride, the rest of the journey is a piece of cake.

I could go on longer but I'll stop now. Before your leave for Alaska, enjoy a visit to www.RVtowster.com.

We drove up(moved) to Anchorage last September 06.

Best roads I've been on in a long time. Most fun I've ever had on a road trip.

Take your time and enjoy.

I'd think about making reservations depending on what time of year you go.

September the campgrounds were empty.

Don't get low on fuel, if you have the chance to get fuel get it.

But finding fuel really wasn't a problem at all.

I want to drive it again!!

Finding fuel wasn't a problem for us either but just burn on the top half of the tank so you won't have to worry too much about the next fuel stop.
