Planning Trip East, Pa to Sandwich, Ma

I was looking at taking 95 up the coast any reason why I should not do this? This is my first trip going north. Any must c's or things to avoid, its much appreciated.

If you go through NY on I-95 - Good luck. If you break down and walk to get help, your vehicles will be stripped to the frame rails before you are back. But the parts you need will be available for puchase real soon! I-95 is also called the cross bronx expressway. Do a search of garden spots like "hunts point" for more details about what is on the other side of the fence. A better trip is to hit I-81 and then I-84 east. Through PA and NY it is OK, Ct it is not so good with the construction. Then the Mass Pike gets you toward boston. I am partial to my travel paths. And I have been on both roads.

Being from Boston, I've made the trip many times. I agree with the above except I would exit the Mass Pike at I-495. That would bypass Boston on the South side and leads directly to the Cape. If you use I-95 to skirt Boston, you'll have to head South down I-95 to pick up I-495 or go the much slower Rt 3 to the Cape. Also, Boston after 3:00 PM daily would probably add 1 1/2-2 hours to your travel time because of commuter traffic. Traffic would still be a problem on weekends because everyone from Boston on North has to use Rt 3 to get to the Cape. but not as bad. Have a great trip!

I live in NJ about 10 minutes from the GW Bridge (I-95) and I take I-287 East around NY City and meet up with I-95 in Connecticut.

You still have to go over the GW bridge and thru the area that P, Cambell is talking about before I-287, right? If I went over the GW, I think I would just continue down I-95. Going I-81 would be more scenic, but if time is a consideration, then the GW to I-95 CT to I-195 in Providence to the Cape is probably the quickest. It's definitely the shortest.

I was stuck in a traffic jam on the cross bronx expressway. They were patching the road and had it blocked solid clear across NYC. Didn't notice any unethical behavior except I had to go so bad I filled a WaWa coffee cup... . what a sight that was.

I routinely tow to both to the CT coast by RI and to the mid coast Maine. If you have any choice at all ... stay away from I 95 through NY and western CT. Another real bad part is I84 around Waterbury and Hartford. My vote: 81N to 84E to 87N to 90E then 495. Might be more miles... . but there will be a minimal amount of yahoo's, accidents and construction on the trip.

If you aren't towing, the trip up the coast or across 84 won't be too bad.

My in-laws live in Wilkes-Barre, PA and my parents have a summer home in Chatham, MA. I live right in the middle of the two. Sooo, I would definately go I-81N to I-84E. (Cross Hudson in Newberg for $1. 00) Contruction in CT I-84 between Exits 17 and 30ish. Continue to I-90E (mass pike it'll cost you $1. 10) to exit 11A I-495S. Stay on I-495S till you go over Borne bridge and enter rotary. Go 3/4 around rotary and cross Cape. Sandwich is straight ahead.



If you want to travel with the tourists: Go the "southern route" and be prepared to pay a lot more to cross Hudson and wait. 95N is full of contruction & traffic through Bridgeport (Exit 30ish). Continue I-95N to Providence to I-195E to I-495S. Continue as above or stay with the others that you've already waited in traffic with and take exit 1 (Rt 6). Go to rotary and wait as traffic from Boston (Rt 3) is already in rotary thus stopping your progress. Cross Sagamore bridge and take first few exits for Sandwich, MA.



Don't forget to try some real Chowda' from the Dan'l Webster Inn. Most importantly relax & have fun... .

Another Option

North East extension to Allentown. I-78 East into N. J. to 287 North. Follow signs to Tappen Zee Bridge (Note** stay left after toll. Be aware... nasty construction east of bridge. Would be wise to plan to avoid rush). I-287 will end @ I-95 at Conn/NY line. This is less miles than 81 to 84 and avoids the horrors of the Cross Bronx. I 95 through South East CT. is under construction, but it's not too bad. Watch your speed in the CT construction zones, the cops are serious.

Try to avoid getting to the cape on Friday afternoons, evenings. The traffic trying to get over the bridges is murder. The traffic is also the same trying to get off the Cape on Sunday.
