I knew this was not a permanent piece of gear - my son's broke a long time ago..... when his truck was broken into. Are these easy and cheap to replace? Also does anybody have a better one available????

Are you referring to the plastic latch? If so, try this.

Just today I was thinking about the 'what if's', if someone were to try and break into my truck it would be thru the back slider.

I had some spare aluminum frame material left over from making some window screens. It's the perfect size for a window stop. I cut two of them, one for each glass slider. They fit down in the bottom channel that the glass slides in. In your case with the broken latch, cut them a little over lenth, so it's a tight fit. Then wrap a couple turns of electrical tape on each end to prevent scratching. You could even make a second set that are 2" or so shorter, and put them in the channel so the glass can be opened a few inches on a hot sunny day and still be pretty secure.

It is definately a more expensive option, but if mine ever broke, I would replace it with a powered unit.

The slider is almost worthless since you cannot operate it from the drivers seat.
