Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Please DEFINE DRIVETRAIN

All topics pertaining to Differential are being moved to the NO Engine and NO Drivetrain discussion.



I guess technically, the differential is a DRIVEN component and therefore not part of the DRIVETRAIN!?



Anyone know?

I guess it depends on who you ask. In some applications the differential is referred to as the final drive and the engine and transmission as the drivetrain.



Sometimes threads get moved out of the 12 and 24 valve drivetrain forums to 2nd Gen or Products because they apply to both models. It's often for better exposure than for terminology.

Many 12 and 24 valve owners don't read each others forums and miss reading/answering topics that apply to both.

It works out for the good for 24 valve folks since 12ers have been around longer and have had to deal with common problems that are just cropping up on the newer trucks.

Another view, is to think of where people might look when searching the forums later. While the differentials are of different manufacture 12 valve, 24 valve, and even the third gen all have diffs.



If one were to search in six months or so for info in diffs a forum that covers all might be more appropriate.

While on the subject of searches - choose your topic title wisely when you start a thread, if the title is something like- What If?- it's hard to figure out what it's about without reading it. Also members pressed for time might not want to take the time to open it even though they might have the answer you're looking for.

illflem - I will second that, there have been way too many threads with titles like "yahoooooo" or "I did it" or "Sweet Power" or what ever. Later down the road when searching those messages get skipped, but often contanin very good info.

As far as *I* am concerned, "drivetrain" starts with the engine itself, and ENDS when the power hits the pavement - that includes EVERYTHING from the engine to the wheel bearings - and everything in between...



If ya DON'T think stuff like U-joints or wheel bearings are part of the drivetrain - try REMOVING them, and see how far down the road ya get!

I have a 7/70 DC drive train warranty. Includes the differentials and the wheel bearings. Makes sense to me, but Ihave alway been a little out of step

I second that.



Non-drive train would be like power windows or door locks, what do you consider brakes?

Great points made. I too use the term drivetrain to go from engine to pavement and everthing in the middle, brakes, too.



Maybe the forum descriptions need updating to read:

This would keep the 12 and 12 valved converstions segregated and the generic issues up on a common forum?

I'll discuss this with Robin tomorrow. What we've always done is had the engine and drivetrain forums about the engine and transmission and the 2nd gen forum about everything else on the truck (because everything else - differentials, brakes, etc - are common on all the 2nd gens). A rename of the forums probably would be a good idea.

progressed when I wasn't looking.

The changes are made. We're keeping the transmission forums seperate because there are quite a few differences between the transmission's of the 94-98 and the 98. 5-02 trucks. This makes the titles of the forums consistent with the way they've actually been run, thanks for the suggestion.
