When you guys change yur fuel filter do you fill the canister up with fuel before you put it back on or do you let the lift pump fill it?I'm asking this because I'm going to start to do my own oil changes and every time I change the oil I change the fuel filter. If you let the lift pump fill the canister how many times do you have to usually bump the starter to get the truck to start?

Darrel, I just bump the starter several times after a filter change and then try cranking, if she doesn't catch after 5 seconds or so I bump the starter again and then try cranking again, until she fires up. I don't fill the canister manually as the fuel you put in is unfiltered and going right to the injection pump. If you want to fill the canister manually, I'd pick up some fine mesh screen and place a few discs of the screen into the funnel, then pour your diesel into the canister through the funnel. Just my opinion though .

darrelb, put the new filter in put on the lid, dont fill the canister, put a container under the hose on the drain valve on the side of the canister, bump the starter and let it pump till you get clear fuel out of the hose ( no air) close the valve start her up. works good.

With the amount of oil one of these trucks hold I just might. I think I'll even throw in a little diesel fuel, the way it foams up when you pump it it'll be like a big smelly bubble bath.

you know you have it right when there is a stream of fuel running down the driveway, the wife is bichin cause the inside of the house "stinks", you got oil in your mouth, and you got one eye closed cause something landed in it from somwhere under the truck, the drain plug is lost somewhere in the 10 quarts of kitty litter and oil piled up under the truck.

I go along with "rubberneck" I just did my fuel filter last weekend for the first time at 13K miles. I used the same method and it's fast and easy. There isn't much air... . the lift pump purges it quickly and I had no trouble it, started right away after the purge.

Don't forget to close your valve... it gets messy fast.

I've only had my truck sence Aug. of 01. I LOVE this BEAST.

LMAO @ rubberneck's description... . you left out the part where the oil stains in the driveway and road in front of the house, depreciate the value of the house at resale time. My next house will have a gravel driveway leading to a garage with an epoxy-coated floor. If I can get my money back out of this one.

Lots of trouble

I changed my fuel filter for the first tiime about 2 weeks ago..... tried the bump the starter method... ..... did not work at all... ... after about 30 bumps of the starter i only had about an inch of diesel in the bottom of the canister..... i could here the pump run each time... ..... but hardly any fuel in the canister... had to fill with diesel then she started right up... . Did i do something wrong?

Are you talking about the bleed screw that at the end of your fuel line where it connects to your injection pump?

I don't know where the bleed screw is on a 24 valve engine. I thought it was on the filter cap somewhere.

DC's book on this truck and engine did not say anything about opening a bleed screw on top of the filter housing... . It says to open the line at the injection pump (the line coming out of the filter houseing going forward)... ... And then bump the starter until you get fuel out of the banjo bolt you loosened at the injection pump. Then tighten the bolt back down and start it.



Hope I remembered that all correctly... ... .
