I cant figure out what's wrong with my truck. The truck used to (2 weeks ago) snap your head back when accelerating, and pour out black smoke. Now thw truck feels like It want to go but cant, very little smoke, compared t what it used to have. I changed the fuel filter and it was very black and dirty. I drained the filter housing, cleaned my afe air filter and its still feels like crap. It almost feels like i am towing something. the truck has very poor throttle response. I am very worried that something major is wrong. You guys have any similar problems? PLease help. How many fuel filters would it take, if that was the problem. I have stack, edge juice, and bully dog triple dog on extreme setting.

Check your oil level and make sure that your truck is not "making" oil. That would suggest a cracked and leaking injector(s)

If that is the case you need to park your truck and get your injectors pulled and turned in for testing.

Does this truck have gauges in it. If so, I would lean towards boost issue. From there I would check fuel pressure and then computer/fueling/de-fueling issues. Try to take out(unplug) the chips and check for normal stock performance. If you can get it back to stock level, you could highly suspect chips/stacking of chips issues. Good luck!!

will check the oil level. I took the chips out and the truck almost feels the same with them as without them. The boost is still in the 20-30lb range under hard accel. It is very strange. How do you check fuel pressure. This afternoon i floored it and it kind of broke up, like it was not getting enough fuel. but it was still running fine. the gas pedal (seems) to feel a bit harder to push down, and i used to be able to snap the pedal, and it would come right back, now it seems to take longer,

I WOULD GO AFTER RAIL PRESSURE AND TRY TO FIND A BUDDY THAT WILL LET YOU TRY OUT HIS THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR ASSEMBLY...

Being that your truck is an 04 I would check lift pump. I would also check the relief valve for being stuck open.

Anyone have an idea how to check these things, I'm taking this very hard, sinking into a depression... ... ... ... ... ..... Do i need to take it to the dealer? I have 99k on the truck. I took the edge box off today and it still feels the same. almost like the ebrake is on. #@$%!#@$%!#@$%!#@$%!# oH, I checked on the triple dog, yesterday, and the ambient air temp code, and something about map or mar?

On my truck I pulled the pressure relief valve from the top of the rail and taped it with a 1/8" pipe tap and then stuck an 1/8 pipe plug up in it. I'm running up to 27K and no problems so far. As for the lift pump pressure you can pick up a tapped banjo bolt from geno's garage and use that at the CP3 pump along with a gauge to test for fuel pressure.

I also have an 04 and the lift pump on the back of the fuel filter housing is junk. I replaced mine with a homemade Walbro setup but you can pick up a pre-made system from Glacier Diesel.

I changed the fuel filter and it was very black and dirty.

How often do you change the filter? It shouldn't be so black. It could be contaminated fuel causing the problem.

With all those fueling boxes, it's quite possible you've destroyed your rail pressure relief valve. It can be capped, although I wouldn't recommend using NPT fittings to do this, even though AEzzo has had success with this method - ASME code B31. 3 indicates permissible working pressure is well below maximum rail pressure.

Lift pump is a good candidate. If it's the one on the back of the filter canister you really need to get a new one. You can test the existing one by pulling the fuel feed line at the CP-3, turning on the lift pump (bump the starter) and measuring the flow rate.

I took it to the dealer and he said that the fuel pressure was very low at speed, so he thinks it may be the lift pump. He also said that there was an upgrade for the fuel pump in the tank??

The black fuel filter could be bacteria. Sometimes called algee. Get some biocide to put in the tank. It won't hurt anything to dose it.

You got my attention there... My filter is always black. Not clogged, just "colored" black. Replaced my own pump module a few months ago, tank was spotless, cleaned it anyway. ALL fuel now goes into my aux tank 1st, thru a 2u Cat filter, then to the stock tank... Should be zero water in stock system. Still have a black filter and suspected, at one time anyway, biological...

Reason I'm posting is I can't find a TRUE biocide anywhere. Fleetguard makes one but it's only sold in high doses, i. e. , well over $200 for a bottle. Just want to treat a few tankfulls to rule it out. Color might be normal but it wouldn't hurt to treat, especially since I'm all over North America year around.

Has anyone seen a TRUE microbicide on the shelf anywhere? Lot's of additives try to tie there water removal ability to "biological" but it's misleading. I'm looking for a real live bug killer with practical dosages for 100g or less... TIA.

Thanks. Just what I was looking for (for a long time). I hadn't considered marine stores. Truck centers look at me like I'm nuts when I ask...

I've had my tank down twice. Once for the vent mod and the other for a drawstraw. It is spotless inside. And my fuel filter is always black. Has been since new and I change it every 10k.

Looks like you had this problem at just the right time---99k... After they installed the intank pump on mine, I ran about 10#. I think it's about $1800 for the pump swap.
