24 valve fuel system is an unreliable mess. Read the current adventures in the Truck "911" forum with the electric lift pump/VP 44. If you get a 24 valve make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes on board all the time.
 
I have a 98. 5 24 valve built in Dec 97. 104K miles, original lift pump, cheched valve clearance first time at 99560 miles, were within . 002 of recommended setting. Needless to say I didn't adjust them. Best trucks seem to come from Mexico according to dealer I purchased mine from. Nuf Said.

I hope for your sake that the valves were . 002" OVER the spec. , not under. And what does a truck's origin have to do with the question?

Midyear '98 in production year Dodge had to meet new stringent emmission restrictions and did so, supposedly as a stopgap measure, by offering up the then new 24 valve engined trucks replete with a statistically unreliable electronic controls of fuel, air, timing, and driveline including all gauges and most ergonomic features. The trucks have proven themselves over time to be less reliable than were their 12 valve predessessors, and far more expensive to diagnose and repair when needed. There are individual exceptions just as there have been exceptions to the 12 valve truck's overall reliability but both are few and far between.

Hmmm, my VP-44 is going on 90,000 perfect running miles, the rest of the truck, well, glad I bought the extended warranty. 3 NV-5600's, 3 trac bars, 2nd set of ball joints, 2 or 3 rebuilds on the rear diff to stop a nagging leak, PS pump, 3 lift pumps, 3 steering boxes. Enough said, there are other things to go wrong. Have had less trouble out of the 98 12V, just tires, brakes, and 1 lift pump. Oh yea, the steering wheel has been flawless :-laf
 
I have a 95' 2500 CC. auto -rebuilt at 100k with the goodies. now 150k. Been thinking about moving to a 99' to a 02'. With all I'm reading I think I'll keep this one several more years. What do you guys think?
 
I would post this same question on the 24 valve forum and get your answers from 24 valve owners. My 24 valve 99 has had 1 lift pump replaced by me for $140. 00. Other than that is has been flawless in all of it's 132,000 miles. And my stock auto is still doing fine. 78repowerwagon has over 226,000 mile on his stock VP44 with no problems also.
 
I have had both. Actually 2 24-valves and my current 12-valve.



There's really no good reason not to get a 24-valve if that's what you want, but personally I wouldn't get the '98 24-valve as there are known reliability issues with the early 24-valve injection pumps.



In stock form the 24-valve will have more power and better throttle response. The 12-valve seems quieter to me than either of my 24-valve trucks were.



The lift pump on the 24-valve trucks can be problematic, read the 24-valve forums for solutions to that, it has been beaten to death, resurrected and then beaten to death again.



I believe that the 12-valve injection system is probably more reliable than the 24-valve system, but if money for the truck note wasn't an issue I'd be driving a 24-valve.

Got both in the family. Like them both the same, they each have their benefits and disadvantages. My '01 has 126,000 miles, 110,000 of those at high power, and I'm on my original injection pump. Been through 6 lift pumps, though, and this last one has held up over a year. It's a small price to pay as far as I'm concerned, it's easier to change the pump than spark plugs in a Chevy. :D
 
so a 99 24 valve might be better than 98 ?? IT "s a tough disisson I like the rear doors to open !! 98 12 valve is my first choice ! but gotta fine one !! thanks guys
