Joe,

Glad you chimed in. The previous owner of my truck used Fram, Do I need to worry about this issue? It had a Wix on it when I purchased it. I dumped the oil and installed a Fleetguard as soon as I got it home. It runs and sounds like it should, but I am worried what might happen with a trailer

TIA

Matt

I have no experience with this but can make some educated assumptions.

If your filter media denigrates the damage will happen quite fast, I highly doubt that residue from a previous bad Fram filter will be hiding out waiting to plug things. If you suspect that you may have of had a previous disintegrated filter just strain your drain oil and see what comes up. If you find filter pieces then call Fram as to what to do next. I use Fram here only as an example, any filter can fail.

Matt, I wish I could give you a "don't worry" reply. You are right, the nozzles could be plugged or restricted and you would not know it until you "poured the coals" to the engine, when the cooling effect of the oil spray would be needed. The chances for a problem are probably small. However, that would be scant help if the small probability included your engine.

Back in 1999 and even recently, Cummins has reassured us that the chance of the dowel pin falling out was remote. In my experience, remote = 80% if we count pins that have started moving by the time I inspected them.

I don't know how to advise you on this one. Balance the high cost of inspection against your wild --- guess about probability. You could most likely inspect the nozzles with a mirror and a piece of wire if you remove the oiil pan. Unfortunately that is a big job.

<blockquote>Like almost all engines, there is a filter bypass valve (p. 9-168 in the 1997 factory service manual) in case the oil is too thick (cold) or the filter is plugged. This may be how particles from oil container seals get through to the cooling nozzles.

Clean oil comes out of the center of the filter, the same place you pour to prefill before installing. Oil filters are also on the suction side of the pump. Gulp and the oil pump sends it to into the system.

clogged cooling nozzles

Hi guys. About 6 months ago I had a 01 24v apart with a pugged cooling nozzle on #5 hole. I noticed that the main bearing of the same journal as the cooling nozzle began to flake off and this is what clogged the nozzle. This truck also had 178,000 miles and pulls 30,000 lbs every day. Check to see that your bearings all look good and post your findings.

Any word from Fram?

RPerrenoud,

Have you heard anything from Fram? Are they looking at it?

Just wondered how things were progressing.

Thanks,

Blake

A few days ago I was in the local parts store when the Fram rep walked in. I asked him about Fram filters causing the cooling nozzles to plug up. He answered by telling me that they have never had one case where their filter was to blame for the cooling nozzles to plug in a 5. 9. So my question is, has Fram gone good for anybody's rebuild because filter failure was proven?

No update at this point in time, I have not heard anything yet on the analysis on the debris. I have just been trying to get my truck put back together. I had to send the block to a machine shop to be bored . 020 over I will be picking it up tommorow. I REALLY MISS THE RAM YOU KNOW!
