Pluging Up Help?

Ok I've got my truck up for sale(92 D350) but might end up having to keep it because my other truck is in ****ty ****ty shape(motor is about to upwind from high high mileage) I've drove the dually a day or two and it aint been really really cold,just raining all the dang time! But it has been "chilly" and the truck takes FOREVER to start,I turn it on,grid heaters kick in and run for like 30-40 seconds before the things ever shut off,when they do it'll fire right off. Can I just bump the switch and it start without waiting on the heaters? On my buddies 2000 you can and it'll fire right up. Just wondering if plugging the truck up will help it start quicker and will it help the heater(for the interior) get warm quicker because mine takes a year to ever get warm LOL Also is there anyway to run the plug-in outside of the truck without having to raise the hood every morning? Because mine is up under the air intake.

You can run your block heater plug out of the grill. Just tie strap it where you want it. We've been having pretty cold nights here lately (high 30s low 40s) and my truck lights right off, grid heaters or not.

After one cycle of the grid heaters mine fires on the first cylinder up down to 20 degrees and for the most part the second cylinder from there down to 0. It will start on 2 or 3 revs without waiting for the heaters but you had better stay away from exhaust for a while.



Bumping the timing really helped with the cold start and making sure the KSB functions correctly makes a big difference. Rebuilding the pump might have something to do with that. Cheers.

Thanks for the info,I'll see about getting it run out the grille and able to be plugged up. I reckon I'll also just wait and listen to the grid heaters do their thing LOL The KSB,where exactly is that thing,got any pics etc? My truck will blow a little blue white smoke on cold mornings,starting off and on decel. The truck was babied and only has 86k on it so the pump is fine. But I think the KSB is either dying or the wires/connections are corroided(any help on that?) Will plugging it up also help the interior heater get warmer quicker or is that just a thing on these trucks that the heater doesn't get real warm quick.

I have the plug tiewrapped to the grill and that works fine. Some guys have installed plug in sockets in their bumpers... that's a nice upgrade.

I get heat several miles and maybe 5 minutes sooner when I plug in.

What's really nice is for mornings like yesterday... 28 degrees and freezing rain, but there was just enough warmth at start-up to keep the windshield from icing up.



I use a heavy duty timer that runs the element for about 2 1/2 hours prior to my normal 5:30 departure time. Unless the temperature get below about + 10 deg F it will keep the engine warm enough so the grids don't cycle.

When I'm not plugged in I generally don't bother to wait for the grid heater to cycle unless the temp get's below 20 deg F or so. It'll fire on the first or second stroke at that temp.

Below that I wait for the heater to cycle.
