I carried a Bali Song "butterfly knife" for several years back in the 80s when I was an electronics tech. The martial arts films have given them a kind of "gimmicky" reputation but they are actually VERY practical as a working knife. Nothing else is as easy to open / shut one-handed, and it can't close while you hold it. Was very handy indeed. Now they are classed as illegal knives just because some politicians saw 'em in a movie.

All through high school a lot of us boys carried the famous Buck "folding hunter" in the belt pouch, they were good tough knives. Nowadays that would get you thrown in jail I guess.

Have had my old Case pocket knife cause trouble for me at several places in the last few years, starting around 1999. Never could figure out why a knife "just like Grandpa carried" could be so threatening to folks, but at some places (example - Fort Worth high school ball games where they use metal detectors) they will not let you in carrying a pocket knife like that.

Boker

Got a folder with a four inch blade does everything from dress out deer to cutting the ends off of cigars. Lost it this season and my buddy found it in the mud near where we were parked at a deer path. Caked with mud and very wet for a month. Rinsed it off and oiled it and it is good as new.

I got in a little trouble when I was called for jury duty. It's been over 10 years since my last time, and I guess a lot has changed.

Upon entering the courthouse, I was asked to empty my pockets.

I dumped the usuial, and my Benchmade knife that I wore daily.

The female sherriff told me that I can pick it up at the end of the day, then gave me a reciept. I normally would have just walked it out to the car, but I got a ride that day.

At the end of the day there was a different sherriff there. I gave him the ticket, and asked for my belongings.

He told me that the prosecuter has it. I told him "I'm leaving so get it from the prosecuter". This went back and forth for a minute or two, and the outcome was I wasnt going to get the knife.

One of his ramblings was "dont worry, it's not going to be destroyed". After hearing this a few times my reply was "NO S&!T... it's a $100. 00+ knife, I know it wont be destroyed!!!" (Dont know if you noticed, but I'm losing my cool by now)

Well, I now ask the deputy to get his supervisor.

The supervisor comes out and I go over the whole story again with him. He dont want to return my property either.

At this point I dropped my wallet and a PBA card fell out.

Well to try to make a long story short, everyones additude changes now, and I get my knife. It was in the back room with the supervisor all along.

Oh BTW, this was pre 9-11

mimprevento,

Is your Boker the ceramic-blade version? I've looked at those knives and been tempted to buy one 1,000 times but never known anybody who had one and reluctant to shell out the bucks on something that might be fragile. They sure cut good.

Patriot,

I bet you were ticked when they wouldn't give that knife back. When we went to NASA last summer, they wouldn't let me in with my Case pocket knife and the guard was going to take it and keep it up front. I'm thinking, "Yeah, I 'm gonna leave my favorite knife I've had for years and paid $100+ bucks for, in the hands of somebody who might 'disappear' it as soon as I walk off. " Wife took it back to the truck and locked it up for me.

It is sad that our society is so saturated with cowardice and fear of lawsuits that even a piddlin' pocket knife can cause such hysteria. Jeez, even Neanderthal man carried around edged weapons millenia ago, you'd think people would be comfortable with the idea by now.

Yea, go figger. They wouldnt let people in with a sealed bottle of water.

Guess there's a reason, but it was pretty stupid if you ask me.
