The POD's can be "fed" (like most injectors) so that the smoke is reduced and the mileage is held fairly well.

I have had some success by carefully tuning the injection pump, and custom grinding my AFC cone so the fueling comes in at higher boost levels (that's were you would be stuffing your foot into it and want the fuel). This helps reduce around town smoke and also the highway smoke if you tromp on it hard.

The thinnest washer that comes in the POD kit is the one to use.

We have not had any secondary problems when using the twenty thou washers and the do seem to help the idle/low end smoke.

If you really minimize the fueling to these things, they still give you a good shot in jockeys'... .

One of the reasons I liked the 185's was because they could be "up fed" to start to perform like the POD's fairly easily. At a certain point they overlap from were the 185's left off and the POD's picked up was not bad. I was able to bring the POD's down to what would roughly be described as the upper end of the 185 range including HP/smoke/EGT's/response/boost.

The tip design is the root cause of the haze at idle. The POD injetors are a large sac injector and no matter how hard you try there will almost always be a tiny bit of fuel leaving the tip after the primary high pressure fuel cloud has been fired.

You can make further adjustments by increased timing. . within reason. This will help to keep any residual release of fuel, from the tip, inside the burn cycle in the cylinder.

At least that's my take on them... :D:D

Pastor Bob,

What about increasing the airflow - that will help reduce the smoke as well. Along with a turbo such as the PDR HX-35 , the ATS exhaust manifold, & better air in, what about a head that flows better? I expect the Cummins responds to this the same as a gasser would. Porting along with bigger valves would help and then o-rings to help hold the increased pressure from the higher boost levels would reduce the smoke and make a more dependable set up.

Some folks would not want the extra smoke and have to do all this but there are some that will do whatever it takes in the quest for "more power"!:D I have no doubt that I can make 300 HP with the 185's I have now with only a few more mods so I'll keep them. The new manifold will help some so I'll see what happens.

Darn, I guess I'd better start saving my money for one of those special heads that I heard Piers has. That would put me over the 300 mark. Hmmmmm - maybe I'll put the POD's in my truck instead of giving them to my son!:) (no, can't do that,I already told him they were his)

He's bit hard!!

Spoken like a true motorhead! Brother Stan - I do believe you have BOMBing fever my friend!!!

How you like the o/d? I 'shift' into '4th' manually now almost every time... hmmm, might not need the 5-speed... . but then again I like to row my vehicles... .

:( You may be right Sam. Maybe I am hooked. I just wanted to get around 28 psi or so of boost, now look where I'm at and what I still want to do. Darn, guess the Pastor really got me converted!

The shift lever works great. I was going to do this several years ago when Rodney first did it but just never got around to it. Seeing it in some of the other trucks got me thinking about it again. Now my Son wants it done to his truck so I already got one for him and will install it next week.

PS - the 60 PSI boost gauge is going in this weekend!:) :D

MORE POWER!!!!!

I have done several different things to my dually (different exhaust, air inlet mods, tighter torque convertor, etc. ), and none of the mods have seemed to hurt the fuel mileage. With 4. 10's and short (235/85/16) tires and a rather aggressive driving style I have always gotten about 14 mpg average. The POD's increased the smiles per gallon, and when driven with restraint didn't hurt the miles per gallon any.

I do believe you have BOMBing fever my friend

:--) :--)

I heard that there is a cure for that, but it takes a long time and insurance doesn't cover it.

It takes many visits to the internet, you have to memorize your credit card numbers, learn how to use the UPS package tracking system, and be prepared to spend a fair amount of time "under hood" fixing things that already work perfectly well.

You must attend with some regularity meetings of "BOMB-aholics annonomous" which are often diguised as "BOMBing parties", "KDP parties", "seafood challenges".

If your truck is over 5 years old, annual visits to a dynomologist are highly recommended.

The occasional "rice burner smoking" and "Powerstroke dusting" is permitted, but be advised that too much of a good thing is liable to cause you to retain "the fever" well into your old age.

Jay,

I've done most of the stuff you have said will help -IT IS GETTIN WORSE!! Ican't seem to quit. :( :D :D

Maybe if I go ahead and let myself go, do every thing I can do to the truck I will be cured. HmmmmmmOo. :) :)

IT IS GETTIN WORSE!! Ican't seem to quit.

Terminal BOMBitis?:D :D

I recommend 4 ounces of "Stan-o Dyn" per tankfull.

Sorry for the humor. . I thought it was punny.

I'm hanging on to my day job.

You Guys...............................

Having this much fun with our trucks? Huh, it's a wonder it's still legal:)

..... The POD's increased the smiles per gallon..... I like that:D

Greenleaf

:-laf :-laf ... ... it really looks like the new medication is kickin in around here... ... . :-laf :-laf

Stan you're right on... . I found the "air in" was a major help... . I also found that the 14cm housing on my HX helped alot at idle/just off idle because the turbo is already spinning even when at a light...

When I ran the 185's I found them to be a pretty clean injector until I started to get a little "brave" with the pump settings.

At the time I hadn't intended to go up to the Lucas but once I did that I really started to have some fun. . not to mention getting under the hood and doing all sorts of tuning/testing etc..... MORE BOOST !!!!

Stan, buddy,,, you are terminally infected with the 'fever'..... ;):D

I almost wish I had an excuse to buy a new head (my wife says that I've hardly used mine)... . whatta gal..... :p

Pastor Bob...

MILES PER GALLON

All kidding aside guys,

I have been getting 18. 1 with 75% around town driving, 25%

2 lane rd highway on average. With the POD injectors installed

how many mpg will it drop assuming, moderate use of the accelerator pedal ie... . no smoking Power Strokes:D

MSilva,

On your original auto, you may end up dumping some cash into it if you go with the PODs. WIth conservative driving, some guys have reported a loss of 1mpg to a gain of 1-1. 5.

Dodgenstein,

I ordered a new set of EDMs (mach 1s, bug hasnt hit me too hard yet) after getting DOWN to 16 mpg, from 20-21 last spring. If they give me my original MPGs, and a little extra kick, I'll be tickled. Lets see... 30K a year divide by 16 mpg x 1. 40 a gallon = $2625. Divide by 1. 25 (25%increase in MPGs); save $525 a year in fuel. If I go to 22-23 mpg, $800 a year fuel savings. Quite a few goodies. I know, extreme example, but I have 5 so-so injectors in terms of pop pressure, and one that is horrible, so my improvement will be above average.

Greenleaf,

QUiet about the fun with our pickups, or it WILL become illegal  .

Paccool,

Even if you get to do everything to your truck, someone else will come up with something bigger and better. We have the airflow we can borrow from 2nd gen; just have to overcome fuelling issues, which is happening fast. Remember a year and a half ago, when 300 RWHP seemed a near miracle? Now we're pushing 500.

BOMBs away!!!!

Daniel

dpuckett,

My average combined mpg is about 14. If driven carefully, I can get about 17 on the highway. Remember this is a 4wd with an automatic with a less than perfect torque convertor. I have a TCI convertor, which is way better than stock, but it still stalls a little too high with the injectors and weight of my truck. My usual day is 120 mi. round trip at 65-70 mph, then beating around the farm for a coupla hours.

Can any of you guys recommend injectors for the setup that's going into my coach? I already installed the 16cm turbine housing, and the transmission is stock with the exception of a new low-stall converter and a Transgo shift kit. I'm afraid the PODs might be alittle to aggressive for my application  and it sounds like the Boschs are now out of my price range. :(

Maybe I oughtta concentrate on getting the damn thing installed and running first, eh?
