We bought my daughter a 1971 Nove that has a stock 307 with a points distributor which is being replaced with a new high performance HEI. According to the company where I bought the HEI. . all it needs is a full 12v to work. He said follow the positive lead off of the coil back to the ballist and then connect to the wire before the ballist. Does that sound about right???

He also said the check to see if it had a resistor wire feeding the coil. .

Anyone done this???

Thanks

Rick

Rick,

I put one on a car about two years ago. Worked great. All I needed was 12V for it to run great, just follow their directions and make sure you have a good 12 volts. The original feed I used carried only 9 volts. Corvettes

No more points to gap!

Trace the positive coil wire back up into the harness. If it's a resistance wire, which I'm 99 percent sure it is, it will be cloth covered. Just trace it up the harness till you get to the connection where it switches from cloth covered wire to normal insulated wire.

Snip the wire here and run normal wire from this point on to the positive terminal of the new HEI.

You'll need HEI type of plug wires too. The distributor terminal ends are different.

After you're done, make sure you're getting full 12 volts to the distributor. If you snip out all of the cloth covered resistance wire, you should be.

The HEI is intalled and working great! It only took a couple of hours from start to finish. . I set the timing up to 12* instead of the 8* that it shows from factor... It starts and runs great. .

Now if some can explain to my daughter that 12* of timing and an old head gasket just dont mix :{ :{ :{

Sure enough. . with that timing and that HEI. . I now have coolant all down the side of the engine. .

NO worries. . we are picking up a 350 4 bolt main long block this week. . so I am not worried about this 307.

Rick,

How much timing is built into the HEI? 12 deg BTC initial is one thing, but without knowing how much TOTAL advance the engine is seeing, lots of questions remain.

Does the HEI have manifold vacuum sensing capability? If so, I wonder how much vacuum advance it allows... .

The HEI has a vaccum advance on it. As far as the total advance I dont know. . I did call the company to get the advance that is in the dist. but I have not gotten a call back yet. When I ran the car it did not ping at all so it wasnt advanced too much. .

Rick

The HEI has a total of 24* advanced built into it and then I added 12*... Just enough to push the gasket past its limit... :-laf :-laf :-laf . .

My daughter was #@$%! #@$%! #@$%! . . Maybe she wont be so upset when the big brown truck drops off a number of boxes tomorrow just for her car!
