Kind of speaks to one of my fears though. I'll be out for a walk and police will be chasing someone and decide I"m a lot easier to catch (really, thats about as far as my paranoia goes).

I like the anti hunter knee jerk reactions in here. "Guys a moron cut off his hands. ", that is so stupid, it should be deleted.



Lets look at the facts, without emotion.



It is against the law, to let your dog run loose, accident or not.

Coyotes are in season year round, with a valid PA hunters lic.

He was on his own property, which means, he has the right to shoot any dog, that is trespassing.



Now, if he did see the tag that indentified it as a police dog, I'm fairly certain he would not have shot. But maybe not, He was no doubt angry that somebodys dog was running the game away.



If he did think it was a coyote,(which is quite possible, low light, and with the inbreeding going on easy mistake. ) he had every right to shoot.





If anyone should be charged with anything, the police should be charged for not keeping their animal under control.



BTW, if I see a GS in my woods, its dead. Along with any other breed I consider dangerous, or I don't know the dog. And I like dogs.

Good one. It totally shows the police are out to get the guy. Charging him with cruelty to animals. If you ask me, the douchebag cops who let the dog out and forgot about him, should be charged with that.

AND charged the $15,000 they are whining about, it cost to train him.

My dad shoots coyotes all the time, and I can tell you, many have looked VERY much like German Sheperds.



The fact of the matter is that the dog was loose, and on this guys property, if you ask me, he had every right to shoot it.



Also, its too bad this hunter didnt have the forsight to tell the cops when they cam knocking on his door that the dog was chasing a deer, right there, the dogs dead, as well as any charges. Doesnt matter if the dog has tags or not, if its chasing a game animal, its as good as dead. (thats the law at least here in MN, if a dog is seen chasing any type of game animal on your land, you have the right to drop that dog. )

The officer neglected to keep the dog under leash.

I dont think the dog's police badge @ 100 yards makes the dog right.

Did the officer mess up not keeping control of the dog, absolutely.

I have seen all kinds of coyotes and shepherds and haven't had trouble telling the difference yet, even at at 100 yds or so. If it is too dark to tell... maybe not a shot one should be taking.

One's livestock is their livelyhood. It must be protected. But shooting every dog that looks at them. Yikes! Don't care to be your neighbor. My dogs would chase livestock for fun, but wouldn't attack or eat it if it fell over begged them to. But again, that is easy to say because I know that for sure and the owner wouldn't.

Even dogs don't like coyotes!

The beliefs such as "If it is brown it is down" cause hunters a lot of grief, because we all know "brown" can turn to "well its kinda brownish" to "I'm sure it was brown at some point" to "I'm too drunk to tell, but it looks brown"... Too many good folks out there hunting that they are making look bad too.

Sorry to ramble random thoughts. I guess my opinion boils down to, if they could prove he knew it was a po po dog then look into charges. If not, just a bad deal, no charges.

When I was growing up, we spent every summer in upper NY state. (St Lawrence county)

If a dog, any dog did this it would be stressing the animal and could cause possible injury. It would be shot and I'd have to agree with the farmer.



But I digress... that's not what the post is about.

It is interesting that the shooting of this police dog stimulated more discussion than the not-so-long-ago murder of several people by that SKS-toting Hmong hunter up north. Maybe they looked like coyotes, too.
