Polished the UTE bumper

I finally got around to cleaning up my UTE bumper. It had been on the truck for about 18 months and had really lost its luster. Here are some before and after pics. I used Mothers, a 4 inch buffing wheel from Harbor Freight and a drill motor. Lots of work, but brought back a nice shine!

Curtis, I also want to mention that I got my UTE from Layne at Denver Offroad. I even went out to visit Layne at his shop and he ended up doing my install.



Layne also builds a very sweet aluminum bumper – called the Denver Offroad bumper. Layne has been building bumpers for quite a while and there are quite a few TDR folks who have them. For me, it was a real toss up between Layne's bumper and the UTE. Layne's bumper has some definite advantages over the UTE - one being the D-rings on the front that can be used for jacking. Layne builds a terrific bumper and is a real good guy. Honest, straight up, and fun to talk to.

I been thinking of doing that to my UTE bumper. I have plenty of experience polishing aluminum. 22 yrs of pulling aluminum trailers hauling fuel a guy has to have something to do when he's waiting his turn to load at the pipeline. Maybe this winter when i get bored I'll go lite a fire in the shop, crank up some tunes & go to work on it. Anybody want polishing lessons feel free to drop buy but bring the beer.

I love this bumper! BUT This is a clearcoat finish he offered before he moved to Fruita. This finish isn't even offered by Layne anymore I believe. After three years water has been getting under the clearcoat and marring the finish. It looks nice but it is not as durable. The black powdercoated parts to the bumper are still lasting well though.



I pulled it off and dropped it off (with a few engine parts) at Airborn coatings. Should be back by next week. I had it painted silver to match the 2 tone.

I went down that road when the thing was new and really shinny. The folks I talked to said they could not guarantee that it would not cloud or yellow a bit and that chips/scratches would be tough to repair. I figured it would be easier to buff it once in a while than to deal with yellowing and the chips/scratches. Maybe I was wrong? Do I really need to worry about this stuff? Any leads on a good powder coater?

I do like that Denver Off Road! I could really use the D-rings up front. Let me know how things turn out with the paint. It looks like a great deal! Buffing mine was not real bad, but I may have to do it once a year to keep a good shine on it.
