We've got some Compaq Proliant servers at my office that run 24-7. They are brought down once a week (after 8:00pm Saturday evening UUggg) for maintenance and backups. We also have over 200 desktops (all Compaq also) and most of them get turned off every evening. I have not seen any relationship between the life of drives or other parts and wether or not the machine stays on all the time. That said, I turn non servers off when I am not using them. My reasoning is that we run NT4 which does not understand most of the power management functionality that 9x and 2k does so I get tired of hearing drives and fans spinning all the time.

David, there are plenty of us other types who know just enough about computers to be very dangerous. The systems people where I work cringe at the mention of my name. A ofter heard statement is "what the he11 did Sam do now?! #ad

OUrs stay on 24/7 due to network downloads for upgrades (SS system). Only time they are off is if the power is. The servers (main room) are on a WANG UPS (18. 5k) that also feed our VS. It can handle all the equipment for about 18hrs. We did change the BDC's to a smaller UPS due to the change-over lapse time of the WANG UPS.

Other then hate-ing NT and users that dont leave their units ready to log-in, most problems are the infamouse M/S ads (BSD's).

I've been working as a contract programmer for the last twenty years. Since '90 most of that has been for Hewlett Packard. There are thousands of PCs at the Roseville campus where I'm working now. Some are left on all the time and some are turned off everyday. HP wants them all shut down because of energy usage. I've talked to the PC hardware guys and they say they don't really see any difference in failure rate if it's left on or turned off at night. My boss just had his replaced because it was obsolete not because it was broke. He shuts down every night just like HP wants and so do I. If mine breaks HP will get me another or fix it. So far, the one I'm using is working just fine. The one I had before was obsolete but was running ok until it got dropped during a move.

At my job, we use PCs to access the web and our warehouse management
systems. DMSI and PKMS along with varies other windows programs.
We have many users that will lock up at random times. My boss
tells me that we must re-boot every couple 3 days or so. The programs
we run use alot of memory and re-booting re-applies the voids
in the memory. Now that is a little over my head, but since I
have been re-booting, mine hasn't locked up yet [knock on wood].
My PC at home will get really goofy in a week or so if I don't
re-start. Otherwise, I leave mine on all the time with sleep mode on.
I came to the so called IT department back in Aug or Sept and
I seem to be learning alot more about this crazy TV with a keyboard.
Not bad for a ex-truck driver. #ad

I prefer to turn mine off every night. My Sisty-ugler suffered two failures of this box's power supply while she had it. After the second failure, I replace this box with another. I found her wall outlet mis-wired and believe that it caused both failures. Since then, this box/power supply hss operated for five years, being turned on and off at least daily, without failure.

Leave-on and Switch-off proponents can justify their respective positions. There are advantages to both courses of action. It doesn't seem to make much difference.

I concur with klenger's reasons for shutoff.
