Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Is this the VP 44

Aeromotive A1000 with A1000 return regulator set at 30psi (lowest it will go) with 2 CAT filters and 3/4" fuel line from tank to engine. Gauge NEVER moves no matter how high the power is cranked. :p

1. Intank pump to 20 micron filter w/seperator to Carter pump (on the frame and pressure regulated) to 2 micron filter. All plumbed with Vulcan big lines and fittings and OEM FF removed.

2. Fuel pressure regulated to around 13 psi and stays there.

3. Installed last summer. . not used much (1K miles?).

Lift pump

I use a stock lift pump relocated to the frame rail by the fuel tank and a screw-on pre-filter before the LP. Getting 14. 5 psi at idle and about 12 at 70 mph. It's been there about 9 mo and no problems.

Stock pump w/ -6AN fittings

  • 15psi idle on a good day
  • ~6psi WOT

Walbro 392 w/ drawstraw (-8AN to the walbro, then -6AN to the VP)

Summit pre-pump strainer

Mallory 4307M regulator set to 14psi, bypass T'd into the stock return line

Stock post-pump filter

  • 14psi idle
  • 11psi WOT

Tip: the 4307 bolts right up to the stock lift pump bracket. Fwiw I used -6AN o-ring fittings instead of the -8AN it comes with.

Stock NAPA(Carter) pump in stock location with NAPA Gold fuel filter, 12-12. 5 at idle, no less than 7. 5-8 at WOT. Typically 11 on level road. Towing a 13k 5er puts at arond 10psi on level ground. Believe stock VP, but only owned truck since October 2005.

Hi David.

After Airdog install - 15 psi idle, 13,5 at WOT. Installed the Draw Straw though, before the readings were very erratic. Definately helped.

FASS 150.
Running all 1/2" lines.

13. 5 psi idle (stable) - Cant pull below 13. 0.

Used 3 yrs - w/ varied setups - this setup works.

Opinion: First step is to fix the OEM fuel pickup with a Draw Straw or home brew equivalent (1/2" minimum). Run 1/2 minimum lines throughout (use biodiesel rated hose). Keep the OEM fuel filter/heater, use good/big fittings. Dump the carter pump and get the heavy duty aftermarket pump of your choice, consider mechanical but make sure it has the bypass so that it will still allow fuel flow in case it dies. Use heavy gauge wire to feed it (if its electrical), use a relay, dont feed it direct from the ecm. Im my case I trigger the relay from the power window circuit to have it on while the ignition is on, but momentarily turns off while starting to cure the hard start problem - it worked. The ecm reflash probably would have worked as well.

I like the idea that 13. 5 psi is where the VP is calibrated to run. It starts quick, tach is rock-steady at idle, it doesnt lope after stopping from a hard drive and has enough flow to not drop below 13psi under full power (which were all issues in the past). If the pump quits or hiccups, the VP44 can still pull fuel on its own through the big lines and internal bypass of the lift pump and hopefully keep itself fed (which is a big reason for going to 1/2" fuel lines).

Shortshift seems to be the closest to the exact setup, and for that I certainly congratulate him. Someone who has done it, driven it for a while, and KNOWS what works. CONGRATULATIONS!

Mine - RASP 12. 5 - 16, working on the RASP bypass system to get it to 12. 5 - 14. 5 (ie +-1). My lines are AN-6 (3/8) throughout. No OEM ff. Draw Straw. Soon to be custom tank float of brass.

Gary is working on a PWM (Pulse Width Modulator) control for the Walbro (I think) to get that system to 13. 5 and I think controllable pump output from the cab so you can adjust the pump to whatever driving conditions you have (empty / loaded / towing).

Very early production FASS w/ NAPA seperator and 2 Micron filter, 1/2 line kit since 2003. 14 psi in hot weather 15 in cold, 13 is as low as I can pull it. 120k+ on this setup, never missed a beat.

You guys are always a step or 3 ahead. . Cant keep up with you! Ducted fan - Mist spray coolers on the VP & pulse-width modulators. . Thanks for all your efforts and just throwing my 1-1/2 cents worth when it "might" help. .

An addon to the post earlier,

Keep the engine mounted carter pump and use it as a transfer pump from an aux to the main tank, or the other direction if using the in-bed tank works out as the main fuel supply.

Misting the Vp44 - Been there done that, NOT worth the effort of having the water system. Scratch that plan
