I've put a few gallons in from the farm tank when I wasnt sure I had enough to get to town. Otherwise it isnt worth the $10K fine, or whatever it is.

I run it in EVERY diesel engine I have! :-laf

no. ain't worth it... i was driving N on I-95 this weekend (not in the truck) but there was a weigh station on the CT/MA border that was stopping nearly all diesel vehicles... All that I could see. I wouldn't want to be caught in that situation.

Now, with that said, I've run red in the past (last 10 months), and just changed my fuel filter... it wasn't red, almost completely black, not too dirty either...

But, like I said, ain't worth it for road use...

FYI... Be on the lookout if you drive Nebraska. I was coming out of Sterling CO heading North towards Sidney, shortly after crossing the Nebraska state line the HP had a check point set up between 2 hills and were dipping tanks

I wouldn't ever run it. Fine is too much. I know people who run it and people who have been caught running it.

The guy I know was caught in Colorado.

I run it all the time unless I know I am going to be hauling to the sales yards. They like to sho up the the yards and check tanks b/c they know all us cattle guys run it. Haven't been caught yet.

Wow, alot of you guys aren't too bright admitting you run the stuff here.

I work for the DOT, I will be BRB.

KIDDING!!!!!!

Caught ya! Yeah, I run it in everything, but it's not against the law to put it in a tractor... .

What will they do if you put automatic transmission fluid in your fuel? I had a diesel shop tell me to run it once or twice a year to keep the pump lubricated and freed up.

Good question. I just recently filled my fuel filter housing with ATF when i changed the filter prior to a truck pull.

I got a tricky question for all ya- OK, I realize you can run it in tractors, combines, backhoes, graders ect. That is fine and dandy, BUT- explain me this- lets say you are gonna go combine 100 acres of corn in a field 3 miles from your barn, tell me, how are you gonna get it there? Technically, one of the reasons that off road is illegal on road is that there are no taxes applied to it. The taxes are used for, among other things, road maintenance. Mean to tell me a combine dosen't tear up/put wear on the roads?? I would assume no motor vehicle should legally be allowed to touch a public road w/ red fuel in the tank???

Man this is some good feedback. I run red fuel almost always. Just pull up to the pump and pump it. Yea I know it sounds pretty dumb to do that but the gas station don't care and I am just hopeing not to get caught. I'm trying to get a hold of more jet fuel to run. That stuff is over 6 dollars a gallon but I run it when I can get it free :)

If I had easy access to it and running mainly to work and back, town for errands... I'd run it. But I would be worried about doing it if I were driving across states... more so if I was pulling a trailer.

Home Heating Oil is sometimes clear, though normally it's red. Home heating oil is the same as diesel as far as I know. We have run oil furnaces on diesel before when we couldn't get HHO.

I've ran it a few times when I didn't have enough to get to town but if you think about how little your saving then it really isn't worth it. If your like me and you buy 30 gallons maybe once a week thats only a savings of $11 per tank times 52 tanks per year=$572 per year. Plus you have to have a bulk tank and pump at home and the fines and chances of being caught are pretty high. You would have to run it for ten years or longer without getting caught in order to break even with the fine if you did get caught.

First off, try standing your ground when they attempt to pull this crap. They need probale cause. Unless the cop witnessed you filling up its an illegal search. Supreme court ruled that mass/random DUI stops were illegal and this crap is no different. If your not a commercial vehicle then you have no requirement to pull into these stops. I'd like to see the cops face when you refuse. Never submit to a cops request to search your vehicle. Make them get a warrant. Like to see him explaining his reason for the search to the judge. He'd probaly make-up some bogus lie.

State troopers don't need your permission, at least not here in oklahoma, if they feel they have any reason at all they can stop you and search anything, anytime they want too. Not even sure they need probable cause when your on the public road. Now city cops definitley must ask or get a search warrant.
