Lessee what percentage we have here of these various year models - it helps to put failures and other issues in proper perspective.

Total '98 production: 92,000 (this includes 12v)

Total '99 production: 98,000

Total '00 production: 116,000 (this comes from a cummins press release and may be engines shipped in '00 to be installed in '01 trucks)

Total '01 production: 86,454

Total '02 production: 70,979 (I think duramax sales caused the drop)

98-00 info is from here: http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Facts/diesel_sales.htm

'01 and '02 info is from here: http://www.sema.org/main/semaorghome.aspx?id=54570

if anyone has better info I'll update my post :)

Now Gary you know there are 2001's and 2001. 5's. I am not going to vote my 2001. 5 as a 2001, as my rear disc brakes would most likely lock up on me. SNOKING

On the second link the percent of diesel to light truck production is quite interesting. Only "we" few have got the message! Of coarse it matters what they call a light truck. SNOKING

OK - taking current poll results at face value, at least for this board. there are TWICE as many 01-02 trucks represented as compared to the 3 previous years combined.

This MIGHT indicate, for instance, that it would take *2* VP-44 failures in the 01-02 trucks to match the failure-per-thousand rate of those previous years, using responses here as a very crude indicator...

Which might also explain the increasingly expressed opinion that later pumps fail at higher numbers than earlier ones - it may simply be a function of more later model trucks in operation than previous years.

More voters out there?

I do not understand your math. 01 and 02 are the lowest production numbers above???? SNOKING

Gary is simply saying that since there are twice as many 01/02 trucks showing above, we might expect to see twice as many VP44 failures of those years.

(as compared to the other years - all else being equal - and these are just rough numbers due to a low sample rate)

98-00 306,000 in the numbers above.

01-02 157433 in the numbers above.

Half as many, not twice as many. Or maybe I did not learn the "new math"!

We're not talking about how many were MADE, just how many are OWNED and reported on *this* board - there's no way *I* know to determine actual failure rates of various years for specific items - and we do have some here who think the '02's have higher VP-44 failures than other years - which they might - but once you factor in how many reporting on this board own various models - and also report various component failures, it helps adjust rationality for the differing numbers.

If 10 owners here each have and report 2 VP-44 failures in later trucks, vs only *5* owners of earlier models reporting *1* failure - the failure rate might look bad for the later trucks - until you adjust for difference in number of units represented and the effective rate per units reporting.

1 failure out of *5* units = exactly the SAME rate as 2 units out of 10... ;)

NOW, on the other hand, if someone DOES have some sort of official numbers for specific component failure rates for various model years, I'd sure like so see them! ;) :D

OK, I am the one with my wires crossed today. Got it mixed up with the VP44 failure poll. Sorry. SNOKING
