Poor Shifting With Auto transmission

Hey guys, I have a friend with a 92 4x4 with an auto. He has had problems with the shifting. He says that it will either shift too fast or too slow, but most of the time it shifts too fast. Is there anything that he can check and is this a common problem. Thanks for any help you may have.

Have your friend check over the kickdown linkage very closely. Start with the lever on the trans; make shure it can move freely, the shaft it is hooked to tends to get rusty and bind inside of the shift lever. Next check the cable, make sure it moves freely and that the return spring on the injection pump end is in place. If everything appears to be in order check the adjustment, there should be a . 125" gap between the pin on the injection pump and the end of the slot on the cable when at idle warm.

Hi Cody,Have you checked the TPS? That's most likely the problem when shift timing is a problem. My son just got a new one for his 91. 5 and it really made a difference. Be SURE to get it grom Cummins though, about 1/2 the price. About $125. There are several good posts about checking the TBS. Do a search for him. He can check it himself or the guy at Cummins did it for my son gratis. Good Luck,
