Portugal Fuel Prices

I'm currently on holiday (euro-speak for vacation) on Faial Island in the Azores and thought I'd share fuel price information with y'all.

Last week, in Figuera Da Foz which is a bit over 100 miles north of Lisbon, I paid 1. 56 Euros per litre. That figures to about $9. 22 a gallon for diesel. This week I'm in Horta, Faial Island, Azores which is about 1000 miles away from the nearest continent, Europe. Diesel here is . 97 Euro/ litre. That's about $5. 74/gal.

Both places are part of the nation of Portugal but everything on Faial must be brought in via ship or airplane. Nearly all vehicles are diesel and virtually all electricity is generated with diesel power.

One can only wonder why fuel here in Horta is only slightly higher than in the US.

if i had to guess it's the local tax situation, taxes are the main reason european fuel is so much more then ours, which is the reason their roads don't suck like ours imho

Are you going to any of the other islands ?

We toured Pico on Friday and Sao Jorge today (Sun). My grandparents came from those islands.

We have a rental car on Faial but we hired taxi tour guides for the others. Fuel prices were the same on all three islands. I asked and learned that they get a government subsidy for fuel in the Azores. Off road fuel is even quite a bit less. Our driver today said diesel for his boat runs about . 57 euro/litre. Incidently, he was driving a 15 year old Mercedes diesel with 453K plus Km and it ran like a new one.

I'd be happy to send you some pics after we get home. We took them virtually all the way around the island during our tour.
