Possably a new turbo trick

I shimmed my boost regulator by unbolting it from the turbo housing and sticking 2 washers on the bolts that hold the canister onto the turbo housing not allowing it to open the bypass as far, I am right now seeing around 27 psi in boost. It seems a little bit better that before I did this, maybe onto something here?

The computer will only allow so much before you set a code and it backs off the fuel. But, as long as that doesn't happen it sounds like you found a free bomb!

How may psi were you getting before you shimmed it?

It seems like when I was looking at the wastegate actuator rod, it was peened in place. Looks like it's threaded onto the rod in the stock position then crimped so it won't move.

Or you could just install a restrictive boost elbow!

Watch for codes though.

I don't know what boost was before hand as I installed guages after mod was done, but it is noticable, as for how it was done:

on the vacuum canister it is held in place by two bolts with two nuts, removed the nuts, pull the canister a little forward enough to get the washers on and retorque the bolts

mine would hit 25 then go back to 22 and hold steady. with the edge on the way i will not have to worry bout that anymore. 36psi here i come.

My local Turbo guy made me one. It's like a pressure knob on a compressor. Goes in the boost tube on the turbo. I was only getting 25 psi on the dyno. We installed it and adjusted it accordingly and now I'm getting 29-32. Anything over 32 resulted in fuel cut and it falls flat on it's face. I keep it at 30 because it spikes to 32 once in a while under heavy load.



I don't have the dyno numbers but I think it was good for 15 hp and 25 ft lbs.

Mark, You da man! I tried your trick and went from 23 to 26 psi!

The worst part was getting that dang e-clip off the wastegate so I could back up the servo enough to get to the studs but it was well worth it.

Hmmmmm, I take it the '03/'04 pre-EGR HO's aren't receptive to something like a 16cm turbine housing? Sounds like a neat trick with the washers.

I'm not sure but I bet it would have horrendous turbo lag.

Isn't more boost useless without more fuel, or am I missing something? Does it somehow fool the computer so you get more fuel?

I tried this trick it gained about 2-3 more pounds of boost, The only hard part was pulling the actuater rod forward enough to get it back over the wastegate. Great little bomb. Oo.
