i have no heat in the truck, just blows cold air. checked coolant level, half out of the radiator gone. refilled with water to search for leaks. hard to tell were exactly its coming from but water is dripping off the front of the block under the water pump. how hard is the water pump to replace. do i start with just replacing the gasket? any thoughts or additional questions? thanks for any help.

Just replace the pump. It's cheap and easy to do, and while you're in there, you might want to replace the thermostat too as it might be stuck open. The toughest part is filling the cooling system back up with antifreeze and getting all the air burped out. You're over 250K? Are you the original owner? Do you know if the pump has been replaced before? I bet it has and probably several times. These trucks are known for eating water pumps.

I am on my second replacement at 140K.

When you fill it with coolant take the heater hose off the nipple that comes out of the head, fill the radiator with coolant until starts to over flow at that nipple, re-attach the heater hose and continue filling with coolant until full. After a few heat cycles recheck coolant level. Also make sure your overflow bottle has suffucient coolant in it, as the motor heat and cools it uses that container.
