Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transmission Problems

If a pump throws a 0216 isthe pump definetly shot? Aftermarket pump on rail stopped working and the ddrp pump on the engine could not pull fuel through and truck shut off. Bypassed rail pump and ddrp pump has 20 psi, started truck and all runs good. So basically what happened is truck ran out of fuel. If you run out of fuel will you get a 0216?

Under those circumstances a P0216 is possible and doesn't mean the VP44 has failed.

It may continue to run for a long time yet, but be ready to order one just in case.

Good luck,

John L.

The 216 code is an electrical failure and means the pump will die a slow death, the main reason I am going to P pump my truck in another month!

Hi Rick,

I think you're confusing this problem with DTC P0215.

According to the Dodge Diagnostic Procedures Manual, DTC P0216 is a "Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure. " It can be caused by low pressure at the fuel inlet, the VP44's timing gear misaligned, or internal wear.

Presumably the low fuel pressure prevents the VP44 from achieving the desired injection timing and it throws the P0216 DTC.

P0215 is "Fuel Injection Pump Control Circuit" and is all electrical related.

Best regards,

John L.

well i guess i am in a precarious situtation than that many other have had. I am going to have the code cleared and keep on running as for the past few days truck has run great.
