I attempted twice to post on "Wheelhop" without success. So I thought I'd try posting a new topic. I read all 24 responses regarding the rough ride on especially Calif. freeways which I experienced the same problems. I have a '97 3500 Dodge with the Cummins. I live close to Disneyland in Orange County and believe me the 91,5, and 57 freeways leave a lot to be desired. When I first got my truck I loved it except for the bouncing on the freeways expecially the expansion joints which caused me to wear the cup of coffee vs. drinking it. At the time, I had to wait for the BFG Velvet ride shackles to be finalized for the Dodge 3500. I finally put these on and it helped a little. I then put on the Rancho 9000 shocks and experimented with the settings from 1 thru 5. I currently are using them on #2 setting on the front and rear. I still needed something else for the ride because this didn't solve my ride problem. I installed a Transfer flow 38 gal. tank where the spare routinely sits, had my bed sprayed with Rhino lining, and put on a cab high metal camper shell which still didn't solve the ride problem. In 1999 at a TDR meeting in Torrance, I pruchased a Model X spring kit from Mr. Bob's Distributing (advertises in the TDR Classified). At first I was a little leary in that to mount this kit required you to remove the factory overload spring just above your rear leaf spring. This kit consists of a coil spring mounted horizontal above the rear leaf spring with an attachment bracket that replaces or goes between the axle and the rear leaf spring and a bracket that goes over the coiled end of the leaf by the shackle. If you have the Velvet ride shackles, you have to cut off abount 1" from the bracket. A small griding wheel can facilitate this cut. I pull a 10,000 lb. boat with a tongue weight of approxmately 800 lbs. depending on load. This kit actually helped the ride, but I needed a little more. Mr. Bob called me last November and said he finally had a prototype heavy duty Model XX kit. We installed this at my home in Placentia. We tried my truck unloaded and with pulling my boat. The ride was unbelieveable. The worst part was we had to take this kit off the same day because he only had one kit and needed to try it on several other trucks. I kept calling him over the past months, and two weeks ago I took delivery of the new Model XX kits. I put them on the night before I left on a 1,000 mile trip in Northern Ca. and down through Reno, Nv. The truck handle great and I experienced a very acceptable ride. The spacing adjustment between the coils was set a . 080 (thickness of a quarter). When I returned, I readjusted the spacing to . 120 using a feelers guage. I think this is where I'm going to leave the adjustment for my vaction to Canada in August. For all of you that have complained about the ride especially on the freeways, I think this kit which cost around $260 is worth every dollar. This kit will work for both the 2500 and 3500 model truck. If your going to carry a heavy camper, I would talk to Mr. Bob on wether he would recommend it.
If you have any questions, post them and I'll attempt to answer them.

Very interesting. Will it fit on my 2500? Does it help out on the swaying while carrying a camper?

I know this kit will help in controlling the sway and as you indicate you have a pop up camper. Your weight isn't that much more than mine without my boat. My truck weighs 7,850 lbs. without the boat. I would recommend you call Mr. Bob and discuss your overall set-up with him. His ph. number is (661)245-0319 or email address is mrbob@frazmtn.com.

good luck

Bob,
First, welcome to the forum! I just bought a set of these from Bob, but haven't had a chance to install them yet. I have rode in a truck with them and was very impressed. The truck handles a lot better, the bounce is much better, but the benefit is the cornering, man its like a sport car, no sway.

By the way I added you to the Orange Rammers list for meeting annoucements, if you can make them, glad to have you. We are a new group just starting.

Will the kit work with air bags?

Mike Vonada -
When you do install this kit, I suggest you use a 3/8" drive male hex (allen) with a 3/8" rachet for making your adjustments. If you don't have a set, Sears sells them. This will cut down the install time and reduce the frustation of hand turning an allen wrench to obtain the . 080 to . 120 adjustment between the coils.

I assume you'll notify me by E-mail prior to the Orange Rammers meetings?

thanks,
Bob Neamy (Buckaroo2Bob)

The ones I put on do look like these except mine have a bracket that goes under the U-bolts. I can't tell if the picture is the Model X or Model XX. The Model XX are the ones you want with the heavier duty spings. Like I indicated, they made a major difference in the ride in my '97 3500 4X4.

I have these on my truck, too, and I love the ride! These replace the camper overload springs, so there is no more clunking when those springs would hit their stops. Also, the camper springs weighed a lot, and the Roadmasters don't weigh anywhere near as much. Any reduction in unsprung weight will improve the ride, too.
I first heard about these at the same L. A. Chapter TDR breakfast in Torrance that Buckaroo2Bob mentioned. There were some members who already had them on their trucks, and the way they raved about them convinced me, because they're people who's opinions I trust. One of them was Roy Rothlisberger, the owner of Mag-Hytec. Also, Bob (Buckaroo2Bob) and two others, Jerry Nielsen (he was the volunteer in the cowboy hat at May Madness), and Jerry Stiles all highly recommended them. Jerry Stiles has airbags, too, and he carries a big slide in camper. I believe he custom fabbed his own mounts for the airbags.
Anyway, if you're looking for a way to improve the ride, you must add these to your list of "Gottahaveits".
A little background about them, Bob Connor (Mr. Bob) told me that these were designed by a Swiss engineer to be used on emergency vehicles in South Africa.

I was wondering if these would help with the terible wheel hop or axle wrap one would experience in snow or mud

What do you mean when you say a reduction in weight will improve the ride ? DO you mean the truck rides best now unloaded ?

Thanks B2B & everyone. Sounds like a must have!

JAddington, the less unsprung weight, the better. Unsprung weight being weight that is not supported by the suspension, weight that must go up and down on bumps, such as the axles, wheels, tires, etc. Off road racers try to have as little unsprung weight as possible. I'm not a racer, maybe someone else can post a more informative reply. Any reduction in weight is helpful, and these replace the camper overload springs.
As for loaded or unloaded, I don't carry much in my truck except for the camper shell and the big custom rear bumper. Well, I have an auxiliary fuel tank, too.
Gotta go!
Andy

Bob,
I was just thinking about that problem today as I was bouncing 57 freeway today. I would like to ride in your truck and see first hand how well these things work. I don't carry any weight to speak of, I bought my 3500 just for fun. #ad
So, the ride is especially important to me. I am going to email you with my phone number.

Just another point of view on this:

I added ladder bars early this spring from National Tire and found they worked great for the 'snow hop and thrash' issue.

Craig,
I found that weight will help make it ride like a limo. Start with something like 500lbs, you won't feel it unless you are doing HVACish 1/4 mile runs. Just MAKE SURE you have it bolted down.
ole 'WillysL' can tell you about that.
