Post Turbo Mount Location

I am doing a pre and post turbo install. Salesmen tell me to use the band clamp for the probe. Is this correct?? I figured I would ask the pro's of the TDR. Thanks guys. If this is not correct what do I need for post turbo????

no

a "band clamp" style thermocouple would only be good for reading the outside temperature of the elbow.



you need to drill and tap for a thermocouple or ask Bill K for a free elbow if there are any left.

I'm using a "Band Clamp" but my elbow is drilled, the thermocouple goes into the elbow and is held in by a band. This is the way my installation kit came and it works fine. I agree, if you were to just clamp the thermocouple to the elbow you wouldn't get a true reading.

I have the tapped mount. The clamp on is for mounting to tubing where there isn't any material to tap into. Another drawback (albeit a slight one) is that they allow a slight amount of exhaust to escape around the hole. You will get a small carbon or soot trail over time. They are also more prone to vibrational exitation than the thread on.



We use the clamp ons on our race sleds and after a couple years I did have one fail. It didn't cause any major problems but it did require a new clamp. (special part)



Given a choice, I would tap the elbow and use the brass fittings.

The gauge with which I am going with is the autometer z series. I already have the boost and was going to order both pyro's. I understand how the band clamp works but didn't know of that was my only choice. What size probe should I ask for as they offered me two different sizes?????

What are the options?

The stuff we use usually has a few options. They are: straight or 90 degree, standard (bullet style) or quick read (do NOT use one of these upstream of the turbo) and then the lead length. Since these are combinations, there are LOTS of options.



Either method grips the sensor the same. It is a compression fitting. The clamp on style uses a small part retained to the special clamp with a snap ring. Kind of Micky Mouse but they do hold up surprisingly well. If the sensor only comes with a clamp, you can get the rest at a hardware store.
