Look for use of approved oil filter.
Expect (worse case) to have injection pump recalibrated.
The valve stem seals could likely use refreshment.
Remove fan and fan mount. Inspect the gear housing for cracks. See KDP (killer dowel pin).
Inspect block and head for coolant leaks (in cold climate was it winterized or the block drained to prevent freezing).
Even if its not in a vehicle, with a battery you should be able to remove the injectors and do a compression test. . you could also get a oil pressure reading from the plug on top of the oil filter housing.
Get the VIN of the vehicle and go to DC, they should be able to tell you the warranty/service history if any.
Why was it mothballed? If it sounds fishy maybe its to good to be true. .
Since no warranty, if everything cks. out, you still might want to not pay more than $3,000. Junkyard running cores are usually at least $1,000 wholesale. An associate recently bought a 175hp (1994) out of a ram being parted out for $800 (minus the injection pump). 200+K mileage. .
Hope this helps.
