Not too sure on the 98, as I have an 01..... but I took my power from the hot wire for the parking/head light switch. It was a cluster in there but with a manual and/or test probe it speeds things up. I have also seen some taking power from the lighter. Hope this helps...
 
on 98. 5 use fuse 8&5 . go to auto store ask for add a circuit. remove the fuses plug in the add a fuse connect the wire to power the gauges and the other the light the gauges. fuses are marked as to which circuits they control. hope this makes sense.
