I plan on doing the nv4500 swap by this summer...

But in the mean time, what should I limit my power to so I don't toast the getrash?

You big HP guys better watch out... I'm rolling in the HP really quick...

:D

With the help of Old Smoky and a little $$$, I'll be wooping up on you guys within a few months.

:D :D :D

Power limit of Getrag

CB I have a Getrag and a 4500 stripped apart on my bench right now. I am hopeing they will cohabitate and have a Vetrag or Gethundred with about eight gears and two overdrives.

The 4500 had failed because of running out of lube. I am going to run the 4500 in the place of an automatic. I have just given up on the OD up/down shifting thing. As to the trannys, I can see very little differences in the two. In fact the gears and bearings are just as big on the Getrag as the 4500. The major difference that I see is in the way the pocket bearing is set up. That is like the New Process setup. The OD is behind the main case in the 4500 and in the case with the Getrag. And of course the shift tower position.

Seems to me that if you are going BIG with the HP, you might want to look at more than the 4500. I am not at all qualified to comment on the fwd setup however as all my trucks are twd and no power mods. I have a 'good' Getrag with 395k.

The question you ask should bring lots of comments from the fwd owners. At least I hope it will as I want to know about the Getrag in the fwd application as well. Been watching your posts for a couple months. Sounds like you are serious about the HP. If you can afford to blow the Getrag, maybe you can be the expert. Keep the Getrag in good condition and full of oil. Press on with the HP and tell us where you got to when it exploded.

Have fun

Thanks.

I would REALLY like to do an NV5600 conversion, but that is very costly.

Anyone here do the conversion to the 6 speed? How much did it cost?

CB, where ya been the past couple weeks. Marty1 has just done the 5600 6 sp conversion in a W350, its probly still on here, just on the last page or so, he did a awesome job, pictures throughout the process. Look at his post in this forum and one he posted in the cummins conversion forum. See what you think. I imagine he'll inspire a few, that thought it was impossible to do this swap. Bill

I've said this for the last 3 changes....

but I hope to remember next time tocut a hole and install a plug and threaded doohickie on the PTO cover opposite the exhaust/ 4x4 driveshaft. That way, it can be overfiled without pulling the shift tower. I'd agree with 1stgen4ever- keep it full, and dont lug it. that means no 3rd gear starts to smoke out the ricers:rolleyes: ;) . (I need to heed THAT advice). I think the Getrag will go as long as the NV4500. I can check with a guy I know and see how much he can get a NV5600 for. Probably cheaper than most here will let them go for. I'll bring it out with me if your offer still stands.

After rebuilding my Getrag i too noticed the bearings ang gears look to be just as strong in a Getrag as in a 4500. The input shaft bearing is bigger on a Getrag. But that aside it looked to me that the Getrag should hold up well to about 650ftlbs after that i belive it would be scetchy. I hope mine holds up, so far so good. The only reson mine went was i busted teeth on 3rd and 4rth gears.

I have collected most of the parts, and aside from the transmission you're looking at about $1600 if you buy everything new (that includes $900 for a South Bend Clutch)

I have a pretty good source for inexpensive NV5600 transmissions, if anyone is looking for one send me a PM.

I've never had a Getrag apart but I can tell you this... I had POD's istalled & the pump turned up... that was the extent of the modifications so lets say maybe 270HP & 600lbs of torque?

The getrag was overfilled with Amsoil & my truck had under 50K original.

It made it less than 1000 miles before melt down!

I was towing a heavy truck at the time & I was on the highway.

Went to pull in for fuel & she just wouldn't shift no more:{

Once it cooled down it would still run in 4th but it was jumping out of all the other gears & not shifting well at all.

It was still overfilled when I pulled it out.

I guess if you baby them you can make them live but I'm not much into babying!:D :D

Well i guess im one of the lucky ones. I dont tow with it yet untill i get a trailer for the Drag car. But i do run the snot out of it every once in a wile. The drag strip is what killed it 2500rpm launches in 4wd and cutting 2. 00 60fts,I was happy with that. Im sure that one day i will have to go with a 4500. But for now ill stick with the Getrag. Of course not much will last long if you dragrace it enough.

I was pretty hard on mine around town & it seemed fine. . I think the heat towing for extended period & in big hills cooked the bearings but even when I pulled it, it still ran nice & quiet... just pops out of gear & hard shifting.

I have been through both and IMHO what is happening is that the back of the case and or the output shaft housing is flexing slightly under load. The Gutrag has its thrust washers in that area and my guess is that it is losing tolerance under hard load. It would be interesting to machine a new output shaft housing, drill the bolts out and see where that led. Short of that, ad a front to back girdle.

You might be onto something because when the power would come on in my truck under load you could just hear that the Getrag didn't like it.

It got wose the more power you ran through it.

I'd never recommend running a Getrag unless you're engine is close to stock or you rarely tow.

Its is the preload on the input shaft that will make the sounds you dicribe i tried to make mine a tad tight but its starting to hum some under heavy load. Guess ill be saving for a 4500.
