My 03 seems to be a little noisier than normal and slugish at the bottom end. Once in a while it will snap out of it and act like it used to. Also my mpg has declined, and Egts are up 100-150 degrees from what they used to be. If you stand by the tail pipe sometimes you can almost hear what sounds like a miss in the rythum of the engine. Truck has 22K mi and no mods. Dealer said there were no codes. Any help would be great.

Mine does the same thing! I have not been able to get any help with this problem. Maybe it is ECM related? I don't know. Anybody have any ideas?

i have the same thing let me see if i can describe it

this would be the normal sound of the cummins idling... ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

this is what mine sounds like in the morning standing listening out of the trail pipe while the truck is idling with the ac off... ... ... ... ..... ummmummmmmummmmummmmummmm

but it is barely noticable until your ear catches the pattern then it will stand out like a sore thumb. i suspect that more people have this problem they just have not noticed. it is either fuel delivery problem ie transfer pump, rail pump or injector. or it is a ECM problem. now another theory which i doubt is that it may correlate to either my cracked alt bracket or the oil leaking out of my valve cover though i doubt it. when i first crank my truck i also get a loud ticking(not the clutch)noise which subsides after the truck idles for about five minutes. i need help.

I was kinda waiting on someone to bring up the lifter noise now that the engine is quiet enough to hear it.

These engines have a solid lifter and gap at the rocker as opposed to the preloaded hydraulic lifter of production gassers.

This gap is set wide cold to allow for thermal expansion of the engine. As the engine becomes warm this gap lessens to where it is less audible.

Mine has been doing the same thing. Very sluggish and then all the sudden it picks up like someone opened the flood gates. I have also noticed a cloud of smoke right after the power surge.

Now mine has gone completely powerless and is at the dealer.

See post here: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78563

They are thinking bad tank of fuel and are in the process of putting in a new fuel filter and checking a few other things.

I will post back when they get the problem resolved. :D

thought mine was bad fuel so i have cycled 5 tanks through since noticing and have change the fuel filter... ... no effect. still ummmmummmmummmmmummmm

Ya know, now that you mention it, my QC sounds a little "off" compared to the dually. The idle just isn't perfectly smooth. Having one that seems to be working perfectly (15k miles) and another that I thought sounded strange (5k miles) makes me think you guys are on to something. The QC isn't due for a FF yet and the fuel comes from the exact same pump, so I would guess at something else for now.

I haven't noticed that the truck runs any differently except at idle. I will have to check into it further.

Hey Matt, did you give em heck for not changing the FF when they were supposed to? Hopefully somebody at that dealer makes not of the FF change interval so others do not suffer the same problem.

Not yet! I'm not sure that the FF is listed as a 15,000 mile service item until I get the truck back and look in the book. I know they forgot to change the rear end fluid and rotate the tires. MORONS I TELL YA!!!

The dealer that changed the oil is NOT the same dealer I take it to when I have work done in it. I take the truck 45 miles away to get stuff fixed and the oil is changed locally.

Woodhouse in Blair does all my repairs because they have a great diesel tech and are always VERY helpful and knowledgeable. The local dealer is more into cars and gas trucks.

Guys, the mmmmmummmmmummmmm sound you hear I believe is normal. Mine does it too. Remember the exhaust manifold configuration and how there is a considerable difference in exhaust routes & distances for each cylinder and you're not going to have a perfectly even exhaust tone. Mine has a bit of throb, but I like it :)

I guess this might be normal but after making a nice run i can seem to hear it. if it was the same all the time then i would understand but the sound changes. it is consistant when cold though. maybe the airflow changes after the manifold etc warms up? the truck drives fine no loss of power that i can tell.

Has this problem ever been fixed? I could not figure out how to relate the sound to words, but the "ummmummmummmummmummm" is exactly what i hear. .

i should be ummmmmmmmmm, constant, not the lope i hear...

the truck runs good over idle, so no dealer work for me, but it still worries me... thanks

no fix for me but the sounds is inline with almost a miss sound i installed and ez and i am going to see if this changes the idle any. when was you motor built mine was 1/06/03

Variations in fuel and temp are considerably more noticeable with the quiet engine -- you can now hear stuff. But I suspected fuel filter; sounds like they've taken care of it. These engines make several 'new' noises in colder weather. You can hear the lift pump and I even think the HPCR is louder in cool/cold weather. First couple times the temp drops I think somethings wrong then I remember 'oh yeah, it's colder today'.
