First time Cummins owner owned only Fords before this. Having a issue with my 98 3500 24v. Sometimes truck has no guts at throttle than picks up at 2k rpm and is fine or has no guts til i park and restart. I got a video of my tailpipe at start and idle its smokes a little didnt do that before just a little worried wont let me upload so probably gunna just post to youtube and link it. Gunna get a reader tomorrow and see if there are any stored. Any insight helps before hand. Also Have a lift pump on hand TPS/APPS and a Map Sensor. My buddy told me those were good buys just in case. thought that was odd but now hoping one of em is what I need even if it comes with his "I told you so". Thanks yall

Not sure as to how Ford diesels operate at throttle from low RPM, but the Cummins turbo diesels need to build boost as the load/RPM increases - only takes a moment, but not an immediate "rush" of power from a dead start like a gas engine. Then, next possibility, is a bad turbo, or leak at some point in the intake after-turbo plumbing that leaks/bleeds off boost - anything from a loose hose clamp, to a hole in a rubber boot. Not much that would change just because the engine was shut down, then restarted...

For sure, if turbo boost is not proper, there WILL be exhaust smoke, especially under acceleration...

As recommended here many times. Boost, fuel, egt and if an automatic temperature gauges. All of those will greatly increase your trouble shooting.
