Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Electrical Problem

I have a 2002 Auto, put a DTT VB in and would like to know some opinions on what other mods that I will need to hold my transmission together, with a edge EZ, and DD2's??

Do yourself a favor....

My advice? Start saving up for the TC; 18 months and 25,000 miles later..... ZERO regrets. Mine is a daily driver and so whilst being fun to drive, it's not too radical :D:D and it had to be exceptionally reliable - pretty important when you consider I'm the wrong side of the Big Pond.

You won't regret the TC upgrade, the 91% DTT set-up is how it should have come off the end of the line in St. Louis.

Good luck!!

Disclaimer: I'm no transmission expert but... ... ..... look at my signature and you will see that your setup would be almost like mine. I will just share my experience. I too got excited! Wanted more power. EZ first, then VB, and then, just couldn't wait, DD2's. I nursed my truck for 3 weeks till I could get to Canada for a aftermarket Torque Converter(TC). I did it backwards. I should have put the TC in before the injectors. I got lucky! When OEM TC was pulled, already showed signs of heat around the bolts of the cover. But... ... . I didn't lose any material into the transmission. And I hadn't hotrodded it much, towed and I already had a DD transmission pan. Point is... ... ... don't chance it. Get the TC BEFORE the injectors. transmission rebuilds are expensive! Stock TC WILL NOT hold both EZ and injectors, but once you get TC and then injectors, boy will you be smiling. BTW, I to this day, still run my EZ on jumper position #3. Runs on injectors only till 12psi, that way is smoother, and IMHO easier on everything and no hammering from the EZ. But when I get on it when rolling, I smile from ear to ear.

RCONE,

I thought EZ jumper position #3 put the EZ in operation at 0 PSI boost. I also have medium injectors and was thinking of going to EZ position #2 to delay EZ operation.

Maybe I misread the EZ instructions - anyone know for sure the operating functions for EZ jumper positions 1,2,3???

kcook,

You WILL fry your trans with EZ & DDII's. EXACTLY how long? How heavy is your foot? It will not last long. The mods you will need are; a new TC and a beefed up transmission, especially the overdrive unit. I fried my transmission with 275's & EZ. I was great with 275's for 90K miles but got only 3K more when the EZ torched it nicely. I did an ATS Stage 4 (everything) and WOW. DTT will take care of you as well.

Ditto to above. I just went with a DDT Valve Body with my DD2's and an 'EZ. ' But my Auto went 'south!'

I could have save a couple of thousand dollars had I had a DTT TC installed at the same time. Oh well, live and learn.

Anyway, I had my transmission completely rebuilt with DTT parts for several thousand dollars but it's worth it. The new 2003 Duramax and the new 2003 Ford have more stock power and torque than our stock Cummins, but with our DTT trannys, there's no comparison!

You are right with regard to the EZ jumper setting. Either my fingers left their hands when typing or I was standing on my head when looking at the back of the EZ box. The position that I run on is #1 (the far left side for use with larger injectors). Sorry for the confusion.

Roger

Not to change the thread subject completely BUT. . I have a DD TTPM True Torque Power Module (aka EZ) The directions state that the box is set to three (max) when shipped. WRONG! At least for mine. I was surprised after putting my DDII's in yesterday, I checked the DDTT and it was set on two. Let's see how many people understand the directions. Here is what mine say and how I interpret. FIRST, they show the directions with the box UPSIDE DOWN, with the PCB (printed circuit board) to the bottom of the EZ case and the sticker down. Setting 1, timing only, is TWO jumpers up & down, to the left set of pins, leaving an upper and lower pin open to the right. Setting 2, Decreased low boost fueling (how mine was when I got it) is the two jumpers on the outside set of pins. Finally, Setting 3, Most responsive (DD states for trucks without injectors OR if smoke is not a concern) is accomplished with BOTH jumpers to the RIGHT set of pins, leaving the left set open. Again, with the box in what I call the upside down position. If you read or misread the directions, Setting 2 is the same either way you turn the box BUT 1 & 3 are reversed if you look at the box wrong. Last thing, I have mine on 3 now?, DDII's and NO SMOKE. Is it because of my AFE filter & straight through exhaust? PLEASE correct me if I am wrong and advise on the smoke issue, anyone??

Jumper settings

When I corrected myself on the jumper settings with my last post, I did so referring to the illustration in Edge's website. In response to your question "RAF" lets just say that you must be running it on the mildest setting as do I. The reason you won't have smoke is that by the time the box kicks in with fueling, timing etc. , your boost is already up and that takes care of it. I believe that everything is working as advertised.

My rambling earlier was based on the directions and diagrams that I recieved from Diesel Dynamics. Also, my redneck dyno tells me I am setting #3:D I have tried the opposite setting (#1) and I can leave a much shorter pair of spin marks down my dirt road than when set to #3 per my earlier description. I guess I could call DD or Edge but think one of these TDR EZ experts outta be able to clarify for all. Roger, do you have a link for edge? I am on their site and can't find a diagram. Man their site is slow. .

Nice looking engine, FREEKIN clean & lotsa $$$ Thanks for the link RaDdodge! This agrees with what I read in my DD intructions. DD states that their box is "SLIGHTLY" less aggressive and specifically tuned for their TT injectors. Not sure if they follow these numbers but here are the quick numbers from your supplied link for the EZ.

EZ Jumper setting 1 33% is added at 0 psi boost

100% is added at 20 psi boost

EZ Jumper setting 2 50% is added at 0 psi boost

100% is added at 15 psi boost

EZ Jumper setting 3 67% is added at 0 psi boost

100% is added at 10 psi boost

I was also trying to clarify the jumper settings to obtain settings 1,2 & 3 and described what my DD dirs said.

This might explain the no smoke issue for me as my turbo spools very fast after gutting the exhaust and installing AFE. I have had my DDII's in for ONE day and wondering what the 3's are like!

Raf - The DD3s will smoke. I had to upgrade the HY35 to Piers HX35 (listen to me, ha - HAD TO). Anyway, the DD3 injectors will smoke a little or a lot, depending. On the Comp, I usually run at 2/1 and have a little smoke when I punch it, especially at zero boost. But I love em. :D In other words, If you don't get it on, you don't have smoke. But who wants to do that all the time. :D Of course it smokes like a loco on a cool humid day with the Comp turned up and the foot through the floorboard. :D :D :D But I don't know anybody that would do that... Really, I use the Comp more to control smoke than anything, honest. :D I have to quit now, my mouth hurts from grinning so much. :D

Humid day for smoke. Sounds like another issue of O2 to #2 ratio. What does that turbo run, roughly? Your gonna make me spend my Christmas cash:{

raf2000,

I agree, the Edge site is slow (at least tonight). Was also looking for jumper settings on their site but had no luck. I read an article somewhere that identified the EZ settings. It included the amount of fueling/timing at prescribed boost pressures for jumper positions 1,2,3. I remember that position 3 (the most aggressive) had some percentage of fueling/timing even at 0 PSI boost. I can't remember the jumper position parameters that were identified in the article.

Has anyone else seen this article? I can't remember (I am 63) where I saw it.
