transmission Temp Question

Best place to get Stanadyne? I've been using the John Deere version of Stanadyne, but they quit stocking the Summer blend in late Summer. I don't care to run the Winter blend all Fall and Winter.

I use Power Service, when I don't have JD. Never have seen ANYTHING elso on the shelf.

Hey, where can a get some Stoddard Solvent too? I use too much acetone for cleaning.

Get my Stanadyne at Diesel Injection Service in Lubbock Tx.

800. 658. 9355

Case of six 1/2 gals. shipped to me in Oregon $101. 34 (shipping was $17. 34)

I did a lot of checking, and even with shipping, this matched a price I could have gotten by driving 140 miles round trip to pick it up.

Uh, okay but I don't need bottles that big. I'll check with them.

They'll order the JD stuff (at the greenandyaller store) for me and give 10% off the normal price, no shipping--I thought that was a decent thing.

Cenex sells it in my area, don't know if they are in TN though. It's used in parts washers a lot. Sort of expendsive, $30 for 5 gallons. I'll bet Napa can get it for you.

looking for lubrication?

Why not ashless 2 stroke oil?

Ashless 2 stroke is intended to be burned without leaving deposits, and is designed for the sole purpose of lubrication. It is also cheaper and more readily available than DFA.

So what’s wrong with adding a bit of oil? Even if it burns a bit faster than the Diesel alone, at 1 oz or less per gallon, it shouldn't matter. Are there other factors that I’m missing (other than the fact that I’d be solely responsible for global warming)?

I've use Power Service since the truck is new and like it, easy to find and the price is always right. I buy it at $10 or so at Wally World in a gallon jug. Getting lazy, with the 110 gallon in bed tank and the stock tank I just throw in a whole gallon at a time even though it'll treat 300 gallons. I fiquire the extra lubricity is good for my aching VP44. :D I ran 1 jug of Stanadyne a while back, cant say I gained anything over my usual PS.

Jeff unless you're getting a full gallon (128 oz) you're paying too much.

I just bought PS in the standard white jug (96oz, treats 300 ga) from Napa on sale for $5. 99, it's usually $7. 99

Wow! I'll have to check the bottle next time I fillup. I think it is a full gallon but I might be wrong. I know I've never seen it for $5. 99 down here. Darn cost of living sucks!! I might have to call your Napa and buy a case or 2!!

The Jugs of power service sold at wal-mart are 96 ounce jugs which treat 300 gallons of diesel.

The price up here is $10. ?? per jug.

but isn't it really 150 gallons the 96 ounces treats if you want 'double the cetane boost' which makes the treatment reach comparable levels to other additives?? That makes it $10 to treat 150 gals. Additives that are much better like Primrose is $6 a bottle and treats 187 gallons - with 12 ounces. It's very concentrated, not just tons of filler #2 like powerservice. Even stanadyne is about the same price or cheaper. Powerservice is all about marketing. I've never noticed any SOTP change or benefit from running PS either. When starting up in extreme cold temps up north, the engines started noticeably more quickly and ran more smoothly from the start with stanadyne compared to without or with powerservice. Primrose and stanadyne also give me a smoother/quieter idle. Didn't have a chance to try primrose in the winter because I moved to FL :D Bottom line is that powerservice is easily available, but there are better choices out there.

Are you sure about that? Just did a search via Google & came across Primrose's website where I found info for 2 DFAs. Accessed the PDF's for both & they both stated that they were 'only' good for a 3-4 cetane boost. If that's the case, then wouldn't that make Primrose more expensive than PS, ~$12 vs ~$10 (or ~$6, if you live near illflem). Am I missing something?

My local NAPA doesn't even carry PS. Let alone at $5. 99 or even $7. 99! Did notice another DFA in a 1gal 'tin' can that, if I remember right, was priced lower than PS from Wally World or Tractor Supply.

That's because you live in Florida where it doesn't get cold. My local Napa usually has just a couple of bottles until winter hits, then they have a pile of it five feet high.

You've got remember most diesel owners, me included, only use additive in the winter for anti-gel properties.

Tonight I was in a Riley's car parts store and saw a bottle of Lucas Fuel System Treatment. On the bottle it said that it treats both Gas and Diesel. This has been the only treatment that I have seen for both. I thought about trying it, but I want some opinions before I screw up something.

Thanks,

Here is a website that has the fuel treatment on it. ( I hope this works)

If you have a Sam's club by you check and see if they have the Rotella DFA, mine has it for a great price, I've used it for several years and it does a good job.

MMO is pretty cheap compared to the special-purpose additives. Try a jug, and see if it works or if Ellis is simply full of beans.

Of course it could be the MMO fumes talking... :D (ranks up there with Hoppes #9 for sniffoliciousness)

I went through my Excel spreadsheet of fuel purchases and copied out some "before / after" results for use of different additives. I took care to pick only cases where the driving conditions before/after were similar (extended trips etc). For the cases where mpg is below 20, I was pulling small utility trailer.

The comments indicate what went into the tank at THAT fillup, the numbers on the same line therefore indicate performance of the PREVIOUS tank of fuel. Example: on Feb 4th 2002, I had returned 18. 6 mpg on the previous tank of plain diesel, and decided to put in 16 oz. of PS to see if it would improve. The next tank I filled with plain diesel, and the 18. 8 mpg showed PS didn't do much.

Since my truck has returned average of 20. 1 mpg over its life with a 0. 8 mpg standard deviation, an improvement / reduction of 0. 5 mpg is essentially in the noise and can't be relied upon as evidence of the additive's performance. Interestingly, only with MMO have I seen a statistically signficant increase. My results have indicated that, at least for my truck and driving style, there isn't much difference between PS and Stanadyne performance-wise, and MMO appears to give better results overall. YMMV
