Power Steering and Brake Failure

Friend called me last nite and said the brakes and powersteering went out at the same time on his 2000 Cab and chasis. The truck has only 42,000 miles.

Would it be the power assist unit (or what ever you call it) behind the master cylinder? Does this unit also effect the power steering?

Need answer quick - got to fix it Monday so he can get back to work.

The first place I'd look would be the power steering pump. It is what supplies all the hydraulic pressure that is used to turn the wheels and boost the brakes. From there I'd look at the hydroboost unit. It sits behind the master cylinder like you mentioned.

Hot Shot,
I lost braking on my 3500 when the power steering failed. D/C had their best technician drive up from the Bay area along with D/C's Zone Rep to take pictures of my dissassembled pump.
Turns out there is a weak spot in the shaft of the pump that snapped where the gear spline meets the the non splined portion of the shaft. The pump is driven directly by the engine.
The Zone rep said D/C has seen other failures and since 2000 has beefed-up the shaft, and they installed a newer model pump in mine. It was a 5 star dealership(Swift Auto World, Sacramento) and everyone was great. #ad
